Is there a way to read the DTC’s for the check engine light on a 2021 JL without a tool?

Very disappointed, the vehicle has already had the engine replaced at 20k miles due to coolant leaking back into it. The new engine only has about 1k miles on it and the light just came on. Checked the gas cap already. Anything else to check before calling the dealer?

You could purchase a purpose-built cable (example) to serve as an interface between your laptop or phone, paired with the relevant diagnostic app. I've done something similar, to very good effect, when tuning my fuel injected motorcycles.

Said apps are either free, with basic functionality, or have a [usually] modest cost but considerably more content for the end user.

There's also Bluetooth readers (example) that provide wireless connectivity for DTCs and engine performance data.

Unless you plan on working on it yourself, it’s just going to be a waste of time and money. Get it into the dealer, they probably left something loose or unplugged.

Great information. I didn't know you could do it from a laptop. I hate working with those small screens that the dedicated code readers have.

However, the OP might consider this a "tool".
