2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon Recon
Hello everyone! My first post is a question unfortunately. I'm looking at finally becoming a Jeep Wrangler owner. I found a 2020 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon Recon that I really like. One thing I'm unsure of is it's listed to have the "Trailer Tow & HD Electrical Group" but there is no hitch receiver. The 7 & 4 pin connectors are there, but no actual hitch. The dealer (not an actual 'Jeep' dealer) states that some Jeeps came that way, which doesn't seem right to me. It also has the steel front and rear steel bumpers if that means anything.

So my question(s) is, does this sound right? If this isn't a thing, is there a reason why the previous owner would have removed the tow hitch receiver? And lastly, how hard and at what cost is it to put one (OEM) back on)? If I do decide to buy it, I guess I could push for them to add it but I'd worry they would cut corners, so it it weren't cost prohibitive

Thanks in advance for any help! I hope to soon be a regular follower and contributer!

You say " One thing I'm unsure of is it's listed to have the "Trailer Tow & HD Electrical Group" "

Do you actually know, if this vehicle left the factory with the "Trailer Tow & HD Electrical Group" ?

Did you happen to notice if the vehicle had Aux switches ?

I'd get the Vin# of the vehicle and take that Vin # and with it, replace the Vin# in this URL and then hit enter.
https://www.jeep.com/webselfservice/BuildSheetServlet?vin=1C4AJWAG5EL143368

You will then get the actual build sheet for the vehicle you are looking at ..... and can see exactly what it left the factory with..

IF, if the vehicle actually did leave the factory with the "Trailer Tow & HD Electrical Group" then just tell the dealer to install the hitch that was undoubtedly removed by the previous owner. Replacement of the actual hitch is no big deal and not expensive to do.

Thanks for the quick response!! Yea, it does have the four AUX switches as well as the 7 & 4 pin connectors. That why it seemed odd that it didn't have the hitch. I'll look up the VIN and see that it says, thanks again!!

Whomever told you that --> "The dealer (not an actual 'Jeep' dealer) states that some Jeeps came that way", is full of chitt and blowing smoke up your ass.

IF the dealer is a motivated seller (probably are) they will undoubtedly install a hitch if you tell them you will take the JL if they install the hitch. They should do that on their dime....so be sure to tell them that.

It's not a bad install at all. The Mopar hitch "kit" is fairly expensive compared to similar aftermarket options, it MSRPs in the $200s. It's P/N is 82215209. There may be a factory replacement P/N that may be priced differently, but you'd likely need to purchase the hardware as well.

Here's the instructions for reference.

EDIT: I do agree with @Rhinebeck01 that this is a good candidate for getting the dealer to do as part of the sale.

If the wiring is all there, it’s a very easy DIY to add the hitch receiver.
This is true! Much rather have the wiring and add a hitch vs. the other way around. FWIW though, the Mopar hitch instructions are lacking, LOL ?. Good thing the installation is intuitive.

Definitly, of the three items in that option to be missing, the hitch is by far the easiest.

See if the dealer will install one as part of your deal. It is used so saying it should have one because it came from the factory that way won't work. Used is usually as is. If the dealer won't throw one in the install is easy and there are several aftermarket hitches that are less expensive and and just as good as OEM

Previous owner probably removed it for their next jeep.

i bought mine on Amazon for pretty cheap. Its a Curt i believe. Im sure the mopar one is made by a major supplier like curt or similar. Easy install. I would tell the dealer to give you a better deal. Say you researched it and it should have come with it and was removed by someone. “Now i have to take it to the jeep dealer to buy one and have it installed and they want like $500!” ……

Thanks for all the replies! It's good to know this doesn't necessarily have to be a deal breaker. I'll push for one on the dealership but if they won't budge, I don't really have a problem just installing one myself. I guess If I have to do it myself , I can choose my own and make sure it gets installed right. Four bolts, I feel confident I can swing that! :CWL:

Retired from Corrections....I have stories.
I gave mine away as my aftermarket bumper had one built in. When I changed my bumper to a different bumper, the new bumper used the stock hitch. I put on my local Jeep Facebook page that I need one. I received two before I could take the post down for free. You can find the hitch on web for sale new for like $50. I would mail you my spare, but the shipping would almost be that much. LOL.

Buddy bought a used JL that did not have a hitch or wiring. The dealer (which was a Jeep dealer) had a hitch and trailer wiring installed as part of the deal. The hitch itself is super easy and quick to install, but the wiring takes much longer. You can buy a brand name hitch for around $100, or a cheapo version for $50. Just don't buy a it that includes the wiring since you don't need it.
