Sorry, Wrangler FNG here.

This is our first Wrangler but not our first Jeep product. We used to have Grand Cherokees, ZJ and WJ models. In the GCs we had the 242 select trac so we had a 4WD option that would not lock the driveshafts together. It seems on the JLU that in 4 HI it will lock the front and rear axles together, is there a way to be in 4 HI without the axles locked together? Or do I need a different transfer case for that. In reading the owners manual there is a 5 position TC?

In winter for NW Indiana we need a mix of 2WD or 4WD driving ability and we would typically just stay in the 4 HI axle unlocked position.

There is a "new" tcase for the JL that allows you to be in "on demand" 4wd or part time 4wd. You can tell if you have it if you have 4hi part time and 4 hi auto. Same as the GC.

You can also tell by looking to see if you have CV joints vs U joints on your front axle.
