Jeep has about 1500 miles. Driving home today with the engine on to run it for a longer drive and it sounds sad….i know the 2.0 is louder but that does not sound right. Guessing that is not normal for the 2.0? This was after the engine was running for about 30 min on my drive home so it was plenty warm.

My 2.0 turbo w/etorque sounds rough and "clattery" when it's cold. I've even been asked if it's a diesel. But after a few minutes it settles to a nice low idle and runs very quiet and smooth (44k miles). It's hard to tell from phone audio, but that does not sound like mine at all. Is that in neutral/park?

That almost sounds like some kind of exhaust leak, doesn't sound normal to me.

I don't think it's the smoothest or best sounding engine by any stretch but I also think its "minuses" are amplified if you've been driving around in electric. That first kick feels rough and sounds like a drunk smoker first thing in the morning.

Yes, that was in Park. It is WAY louder at idle, like when I stop at a traffic light. I am wondering if it has something to do with the "e-save". I changed it to "charge" about a week ago. I will have to play with it back on the original setting and see how the engine sounds. Luckily most of my driving is in electric but probably will take it to the dealer to be safe.

The 2.0 sounds like a tractor by design. They all sound like total shit, again, by design. It's direct injection with two balance shafts. Lots of NVH going on. It's so noisy to the point where just about anyone walking by would assume there's something wrong, or that it was a diesel.

Don't worry about it.

Sorry, I didn't notice in your profile that you're posting about a 4XE. I have no experience with that.

The 2.0L is a DI engine and it is normal that it sounds like a diesel. If something was wrong you would get a CEL. New engines have multiple knock sensors.

It’s likely the loudest new car engine on sale today that isn’t designed to intentionally be loud.

Being DI does not explain it.

It has two balance shafts in addition to direct injection. It's like a double whammy. They told us in class for the reason of dual balance shafts but it's been awhile and I forgot. Generally you don't need a balance shaft in a 4 cylinder unless you go over 2.0L

Then you clearly don’t understand DI engines.
I’ve owned several and listened to many of them. I know exactly what DI injectors sound like and that is absolutely not what is responsible for a majority of the noise coming out of the 2.0

Just did some reading on the balance shafts, interesting stuff.

I’m not fully convinced it’s the source of the noise though
-the entire purpose of the balance shafts is to reduce nvh
-I would assume the alfa 2.0 has them as well, and I don’t believe they sound anything like our jeep 2.0. Alfa 2.0 I believe has a totally different head and is sohc, but I think the block is the same, which I would think would mean the balance shafts design would be the same.

I actually have owned not one but two 2.0L Giulias (2018 and 2021). They sound very similar, but they have multi-air actuator instead of an intake camshaft so sound a little bit better.
