After over 15,000 hits on my original thread, I thought some of you might be interested in an update.
After a new factory long block was installed, the dealership called to tell me the belt driven starter on the E-Torque system was locked up solid, preventing the new engine from even turning over. It needed a new starter. (The BSG starter, not the primary starter)
This raises an additional element to the destruction of the 4th piston as seen in the picture below that was also part of my original post. Did the failed mild hybrid component try to stop the engine? If the belt driven starter can supply the torque for starting, can it exert a stopping force or contribute to detonation on the upstroke? My piston is exploded. (no water or antifreeze, so no hydro lock)
Is failure of the BSG (Belt Starter/Generator) likely to lead to catastrophic failure like the timing belt or chain on a "destructive" engine? If so, is this not a part that should be replaced well before the mileage of expected life? If so, does jeepcare?
Has anyone else here had the BSG component fail to the point of lockup? Did it kill the engine? Did it destroy the engine?
I believe this BSG system is limited to those of us with the 48 volt lithium battery, and not the small ancillary battery under the fuse box. This is another item likely to fail at some point.
All of this happened after waiting almost an entire year for corrosion work to be completed under the original factory warranty. All new doors, hood, and windshield frame. The tailgate corrosion wasn't in the seam, so it was "repaired" (telling me there will be more future corrosion issues) It was in between visits for this work completion and after a software update (I wasn't told about before the update) when all H broke lose. I thought of trading the car in earlier, but the warranty work had to be done while I owned the car. While I continued to own the car, all warranties expired as I was then just over 90K, including the Mild Hybrid federally required warranties.
What a nightmare!
