Back up camera is intermittent. Sometimes I get a rear view, sometimes a black screen with blue X in the top/right corner. Dealer will be looking at it Dec. 26 but I know how difficult intermittent problems are to solve. Anyone encountered this problem before and have a solution?

Thanks in advance.

I’ve got a 2018 Sahara JLU and have recently experienced a couple issues with the backup camera. On 2 separate instances, I’ve lost the grid lines when backing up. Lines returned after stopping and starting back up some time later.

More recently, after stopping for gas on a long road trip, I experienced the rear camera staying on after start up (having never even put the Jeep in reverse). Couldn’t close it out. I pulled over, and when I stopped and restarted it went to a solid blue screen. I shut it back off, opened and closed the door, sat for a minute and restarted and all was back to normal. I took videos and pictures of it happening so I’ll have something, but I’m sure I’ll get the ā€œcannot reproduceā€ when I take it in.

there are other cases where users have linked intermittent audio issues to the backup camera as well (sounds weird, but it’s true). I know they’ve got a new part number for back up cameras now, so I’m guessing it may all be related. Message the @JeepCares user and see if they can track down a star case for your dealer to reference given your symptoms. provide your VIN when you message them.

If I can’t get the dealer to replace the camera, I’ll likely do it out of pocket myself but I plan on pushing the issue with them once I get through the holidays.

I have this exact issue on my 2018 JLU Sahara. Occasionally I’ll lose the grid lines when. Sucking up, and sometimes I’ll go into reverse and the display just shows black until I cycle the car on and off for a while. My working theory is that the black screen gets worse when it’s hot outside and the camera module has been in direct sunlight. I haven’t had the issue of total black display since the heat broke some months ago, but still really frustrating.

I took it to my dealer on the intermittent claim and they couldn’t replicate it. *shocker*

I don't lose the grid lines, just get a black screen with a blue X in the top right corner. I also thought it was temperature related as it seemed to happen below 30F until Sunday when it happened at 47F. So much for that theory. It was working fine until the dealer "fixed" an ESS warning light on the dash 2 weeks back, so now I have the ESS warning light back and an unreliable backup camera.

@JeepCares can you advise if there are tech bulletins on these symptoms? My dealer always claims they never heard of "X" problem but when you lurk in the Wrangler forums it seems a lot of people have "X" problems.

Hi Nick,
In order to put a note on your case, I would need your case number or VIN. If this is of interest, please send us a PM.

In regards to a TSB, I do not currently see any in our system that would address the symptoms you are experiencing.

Been without a backup camera for 5 days, take it to dealer today and the damn camera works. Starting to get aggravated with flakey electronics. Dealer says no codes were thrown so can't troubleshoot.

At least they fixed the ESS warning light by replacing the auxiliary battery.

Has anyone gotten any resolution on getting the backup camera blue/black screen issue resolved? Mine always seems to do it on cold (45 and below) mornings? Took my 2018 JLU Sahara to the dealer twice for this issue. First time the dealer said they couldn't do anything because they couldn't replicate it. The second time was a cold day so they could see the issue. The dealer said Jeep is working on a software fix but they don't have a timeline when it will be out. Has anyone else heard this or is the dealer feeding me a bunch of bs so they don't have to deal with it?

We left for FL in January so have not had a problem except for a couple of mornings when temp was in the high 30’s. Anytime it is over 40F it works fine and since dealer can’t replicate they can’t work on it. I think Jeep know there is a problem but don’t have the resources to address it.

jeep cares,

how can a dealer resolve the problem if it is temperature related? I have not had an issue while in Florida but when the temp drops into the 30’s the problem returns. Jeep needs to be more responsive to this issue since the dealer can not replicate the problem in warm weather.

Hi Nick, We certainly understand your frustration.
