Picked up new JLU in bikini. The local body shop here said to not put ceramic coating or anything on it for 6 months since it’s new. (Besides a hand wax). I had never heard this and figured it would be good to protect the paint asap. Anyone else ever heard of this?

Back in the day, we were told that new car paint had to cure before it was sealed. I'm not so sure about today's paint formulations.

Yeah, sounds like the old way of thinking. Our dealership does them all the time on brand new vehicles

Paint takes time to cure, but it seems unlikely that it was delivered so quickly there was insufficient time already.

How long since it was built?

Pick a different body shop. Clear coat, which is the top layer on your paint, dries quickly. Thats all you need to be concerned with.

The sooner you can get a paint correction done, and even brand new off the truck, vehicles need a paint correction, and get the paint coated, the easier it is.

The longer you wait, the more paint correction you’re going to have to do

Definitely not true what the body shop told you. You should go ahead with plans for the ceramic coating. Almost all new vehicles will require some paint correction and certainly some paint decontamination from sitting at the rail yard. You may not need more paint correction depending on how well you care for your paint, however, you will certainly require more paint decontamination if you wait. The bottom line is, more correction and decontamination equals more money paid out to your detailer. As a side note, if you are planning on doing a paint protection film in conjunction with the ceramic coating, it's a must that you go ahead and get it done. Rock chips will also add extra expense to your project.

I detailed for years till back surgery made me stop. I have found most body shops are clueless when it comes to detailing. They fix or replace panels and paint but I've done my share of buffing out their work and claying out their overspray (2 classic cars - 69 Z-28 and 66 Chevelle SS) so IMHO - they are not the best place to get advice. Now, the detailing world, when it comes to some things is like a little league game with 20 first base coaches! Opinions are everywhere! Look at autogeek forum and ask what coating to get then prepare to drink out of a firehose. Me? I've resisted the coatings for years, the early ones were pricey, touchy to apply and some didn't give the looks that a decent wax would give. Today, everybody makes a coating, hell, you can find them at some auto parts stores and maybe wally mart. So what's the best? As Slick Willy would say," define "is" . "
On my jeep (well in name only, I gave it to my daughter) I washed, clayed and used my old favorite sealer - Menzerna Power Lock, and I just checked and it's been replaced by some ceramic coating (riiiight)
My best advice is don't try to try everything cause that's a fools errand and only makes the detail gods rich, get something reasonable and easy to use.

I recommend you write a formal request to your District Mgr FCA Rep and request that he/she contact the FCA factory for a formal and written answer to your question.
