Here's the story:
I got new tires on my JLR last Friday and want to get the ECU updated with the new tire size so the speedometer and odometer will be correct. I don't HAVE to do this right away. Going from 33's to 35's (315/70/17) is no huge leap and I could just wait until my next scheduled maintenance appointment. However, I WANT to do this now. I have read that Mopar has a specific standard charge for this change ($175).
So I went into my dealership (where I purchased the Jeep) at 11am yesterday (Saturday, 4.6.19). I assumed (INCORRECTLY) that flashing one update (tire size) to the computer wold be a simple matter and I might have to wait an hour or two since I didn't have an appointment. The service guy said they MIGHT be able to finish by 5PM and I'd have to leave the car for 6 hours. I told the guy that sounded ridiculous and he then told me they only have a few techs on Saturday. I didn't want to argue with him that their lack of staffing should not be my problem (especially when I am asking for something simple) so I decided to see if anyone else around could help me.
I make a call to the next nearest dealership. I explain what I want and ask if they can help me. The service guy says that for ECU changes they always block off FOUR HOURS, so I'd have to make an appointment and leave my Jeep there half a day. He said they do this so that in case there is an issue with the ECU update their tech has plenty of time to fix it. I am completely shocked by this thought process and would NEVER want to go to a service center that makes the owner schedule for half a day in case their techs screw up a relatively simple procedure.
There's a dealership closer to my office (but farther from home) so I call them next. The service adviser says come on in and they'll be able to take care of it in an hour or two. So I bring the Jeep in, and leave it with them and go grab some coffee at a local coffee shop. The service adviser calls me an hour later and says there is some issue with the warranty (mind you this is a brand new Jeep) and he will need to talk to his warranty manager on Monday. He said there's some restriction about tire size and that is causing the problem. They can't get it done either.
Recap:
- 1st Dealership (where I bought the thing): It'll take 6 hours
- 2nd Dealership: We need 4 hours because our techs might screw it up
- 3rd Dealership: Red tape Issue (Invalid Tire Size??)
Does any of this sound normal to you??? Was I totally crazy to think this would be a simple update? Should I just buy a Tazer JL and do this myself?? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
