I've been wondering for a while what the actual advantage of larger tires are. I get that they add additional height/clearance and more circumference (although I'm not sure what that helps necessarily). I'm admittedly a total off-road noob...
You arent serious are you?

Actually yes. I totally get the difference between my stock 32s with no lift and your setup. I was thinking more of the hypothetical of going from 32 to like 35 and maybe a two inch lift. Obviously some more clearance, but only what 4" or so? Doesn't seem like a lot, at least to me but I've never attempted climbing rocks.

Think of it like this:

A suspension lift raises the body of the vehicle higher. If you put a 4” lift on your Jeep, the front bumper (and the rest of the frame and body) is 4” higher above the ground than before right? This is useful for climbing or driving over obstacles for sure. But the lowest part of the Jeep, the axles and differential aren’t raised at all. You haven’t increased your minimum ground clearance. BUT... if you put on bigger diameter tires you raise the lowest part of the Jeep (the differentials) higher.

Example: Stick a pencil through the center of 2 normal sized cookies on each end. This represents your wheels and axle. Roll it over an apple on the table. Not gonna make it, right? Now stick the pencil through the center of 2 large pizzas. Easily rolls over the apple with room to spare. That’s the advantage of larger tires. Going up from say 32” to 35” gives you an inch and a half greater ground clearance under the differential. While you might not think that’s much, it could be the difference between making it and hanging up on something. You net one half of the increase in the size of the tires.

EDIT: I forgot about this video that does a good job of explaining and demonstrating it. Skip to 9:10 if you want, that’s where they demonstrate the difference between 33” and 37” tires when off-roading .

Your question isn’t stupid at all. Because you’re learning stuff that some people learned long ago they’ll give you crap. Don’t sweat them.

Fun fact: Running a 20 inch wheel or bigger on a Jeep really limits you Offroad. You need SIDEWALL height in order to be able to air down. Too much wheel rides like shit too Offroad.
Fun fact: MANY buyers of Jeep never intend to ever take them off-road. I know, right? At closing time where I work Wednesday I walked out and the only customer vehicle in the lot was a new JL Sport. I was admiring it with a coworker and discussing their mods. The owners (a couple) came out and we were talking about what we’ve done and our modding plans. They have 20” Black Rhino wheels and low profile Falken Wildpeak tires. I said that I liked the wheels and was considering the same ones at one time. They asked what size. I said 17”. They looked at me quizzically and asked why I’d do that. They were genuinely puzzled and astounded that I’d replace 17” wheels with 17” wheels. I didn’t even drop the fact that I’m going with TALLER profile tires. That might have exploded their heads.

I'm sure that's true - but I don't like info from untrusted sources, ends up being a waste of my time. I spend a lot of time reading on this forum (easily 100's of threads and 1000's of posts so far I'm sure) and have learned a lot, but wading through all of the garbage on YouTube is just painful.

I’m find it baffling that anyone would buy a Jeep as a pavement pounder. To each his own.
