So I decided to figure out a way to use my warn winch to take off my own hard top rather than buying a garage hoist. Off to the hardware store for some eye hooks, carabiners and a few other odds and ends and I've just about got it ironed out. Tall folks would definitely need to duck around it but we are a family of short people so it works just fine at about 5'8"" of clearance.

This is awesome! I'm about to get my winch installed. I've been using an old hoist-a-top from 1999 first for my TJ, then my JK and now my JL. It may be time to upgrade from a hand crank...and no...that has nothing to do with the previous comments by Plex :giggle:

hahah I tried and lost patience. Seemed as though I couldn’t get the format just right or I had to post to YouTube or Facebook to do that, neither of which I felt like doing.

This idea is brilliant!!!!!
I can’t really tell from your pictures what points on the hard top you are attached to with the carabiners. Also how are tieing the ropes back after you get the top off the Jeep?

I used Topsy products brackets attached to the rear window mounts for the rear connecting points. For the front I ran an eye hook through the bolt holes that hold the front to the roll cage and ran a nut and washer on the underside of that. It was important to me that everything was super secure for long term storage so I didn’t have to worry about it dropping if something slipped or got bumped. Once everything is hoisted to height a second set of carabiners locks it down and allows the winch to be released. When the whole thing isn’t in use it’s easy enough to tuck the spare line in rafters or caribener it off to whatever points.
