Rear diff oil black?

I will add the after first oil change it was clean for 2nd Change. 1st change was due to trail damage to drain plug, it couldn’t have been tight. 2nd change was new diff cover.

Did you do it yourself or did you have someone else do it? maybe i'll just get a new rear diff cover and change the oil front and rear myself... or will this cause warranty issues?

Draining and changing is easy, easier with transfer pump. It won’t cause a warranty issue if you use oil equivalent to the specs. I used mobile 1. I later found out rubis don’t need the additive only limited slip diffs need that. Rear diff cover is super easy, front there is less room, but pretty easy, the gasket is reused just be careful with it.

They;re a reputable place, and I think you should learn what scamming is? Why would they warn me about my rear diff oil being black AND TO GO TO THE DEALERSHIP TO GET IT CHECKED OUT, AND ITS POSSIBLY UNDER WARRANTY SO IT WONT COST ME ANYTHING. Scamming would be telling me that its black when its not and that they can change it right now for me for a low price of bullshit.

But I agree the dealership tech doesn't know his shit.

The tech isn't the scammer he was actually smart and new you be under some kind of warranty, but he is poorly trained by the company who does scammy shit.


The was those quick change places work it to hire non experienced techs who most likely never worked in a garage before. They train the techs to the signs of problems with the fluids most most the time what they teach is that what would be considered good oil but mid life oil like your diff is bad and they train the tech to act like it is the end of the world. Good in your guy that he realized that he can't get money out of you but his poor training told him a non issue is a problem.

It is not uncommon for differential oil to change color rather quickly. I usually do my first diff oil change when the vehicle has around 4K miles and then every three to four years after that. Rear differential doesn’t turn black but usually a very dark gray with a metallic look due to the shavings. I wouldn’t be to concerned with the color of your oil. But I would also change it if it was mine because I am ocd.

Man this forum is usually spot on but there’s been so much accusations or assumptions on this thread it blows my mind. Everything needed to answer this guys question was in the first post. Diff fluid should not be black. Especially at 12k km. It should still be that honey color. When it has a bunch of miles, it gets darker. The oil change place wasn’t offering to change it so to say it’s a scam place or whatever was not necessary. The way they check this is pull the plug and dip a finger in.

Like mentioned, take it to the dealer and have them check it based on their report. Death wobble can be several things, again, get the dealer involved. It’s no fun at all.

Do you have jeep wave in CA? If so, it includes several free oil changes.

This is not entirely true. The factory installed diff oil can get colored by packing grease in the axle. Color to me would be little concern as getting the shavings out early on is more of a priority.

Rubicon’s with the trailer tow package have 75/140 synthetic gear oil factory.
Rubicon’s without the trailer tow package have 85/90 conventional hypoid gear oil factory.

I’m not saying I’m a pro but I usually go thru atleast one new car a year and I have never seen anything but nice honey colored oil. These range from tahoes to new 450s. The color and smell of a fluid are the easiest way to do a quick eval on the health of the oil to me. My old work trucks oil is pretty dark but it has 160k miles on it and it’s one of those things I forget about so it’ll be getting a change. That said, 12k km isn’t many miles at all and I would expect the fluid to look new

I have owned 49 new cars in the last 15 years. I use to change the diff oil at 2,000 miles before getting guidance from an Amsoil rep to wait until 4,000 miles. However, a friend of mine builds custom axles and he swears you should do the first change at 1,000 miles due to the break in process. He suggest every 30k miles after that point or after submerging your axles in water.

I just changed my RUBYs Diff. fluid at 500 miles, because-----
I had(?) to install the new Diff. covers and----I had 10 NEW bottles of VALVOLINE 75W-140 that I've had for over eight years--ANYWAY--

Heh Heh, it was the same HONEY color as the SNYTHETIC I removed from the Diffs !!!!

Also what viscosity would be in the front? I assume 75w-85 synthetic

Stock JLU Sahara, 12XXX KM's, 90% highway.

Was getting an oil change and the mechanic was saying my rear diff oil looks really black, and to get it checked by the dealership but could also just be the color of the oil jeeps are using for the JLs... Can anyone put some insight on this? I am going in a few days because they are ordering a new steering stabalizer due to it having the death wobble...

I'm not the only one with the wobble, and Mr Lube, they basically do a check all around and said the rear diff oil looks abit black and to go check it at the dealership to just be cautious.
