Stock JLU Sahara, 12XXX KM's, 90% highway.

Was getting an oil change and the mechanic was saying my rear diff oil looks really black, and to get it checked by the dealership but could also just be the color of the oil jeeps are using for the JLs... Can anyone put some insight on this? I am going in a few days because they are ordering a new steering stabalizer due to it having the death wobble...

Sounds like the dealership doesn't know what it is doing

The gears a breaking in from driving putting metal in the oil turning it black

For death wobbly is caused by a loose installation and a stabilizer just masks the problem not fix it have them check the front end bolts for proper torque

Well the rear diff oil was noticed at a third party (Mr.Lube) and said I should get it checked, even for new they thought it was very black for 12XXX kms, so should I get rear diff oil changed? as for the death wobble, thats what I thought i've read before and I told the guy (one of the mechanics) that I heard it could be loose sway bar, bearings could be gone or whatnot and he was like "No thats definetly the steady bar, ill order one and will put it on"

@JeepCares thoughts?

If your front suspension/steering is all up to "SPEC"--

You can drive the jeep without a front stabilizer--

Of course you shouldn't for any length of time, but the stabilizer just "DAMPENS" any sudden front tire lateral forces, to protect the tie-rod/draglink/steering and your thumbs !

All Diff fluid turns "BLACK" after X miles and you should check your front Diff too--

Have your dealer check the Diff.'s (free) and get the condition on record !

Rumor hasit that on the RUBICONS the FCA factory has used a SYNTHEYIC FLUID for their Diff's--

I'm not sure, but mine was still HONEY colored when I changed it(BOTH) to--VALVOLINE 75W-140SYN.

Good luck

Thank you for the response - So, the fact your rear diff fluid was a honey color, safe to assume my rear diff oil needs to be changed, which is being put on the list of shit the dealer needs to fix lol.

Why did he drain your differential oil during an engine oil change? Are you 100% sure he actually drained some out and looked at it? The color of oil alone doesn’t tell you a lot. Sounds to me like he’s trying to screw you into paying for something you don’t need.

He never drained it, they do checks, and they wouldn't make any money off this lol they told me to go to the dealership to get it checked out and it should be under warranty anyways..

Beats me, the way this shop worked is you drive in, they do your oil change while people under neath are draining your oil and checking for anything out of the ordinary (tire wear, cuts, underneath damage etc) and he was wondering how many km was on the jeep and said the rear axle fluid looks really black for that amount of KM and to go to the dealership to get it looked at.

If you do go somewhere and get it checked, take a look at it for yourself. If possible post a photo of what color it is. I’ve drained differentials on a variety cars (not Jeeps) for over 20 years and I’ve never drained any diff gear oil that was black. So if what he’s telling you is true then it’s odd to me.

So you went to a scammy quick oil change place they are trained to tell people everything is wrong with your car

And the dealership tech is still an idiot

They;re a reputable place, and I think you should learn what scamming is? Why would they warn me about my rear diff oil being black AND TO GO TO THE DEALERSHIP TO GET IT CHECKED OUT, AND ITS POSSIBLY UNDER WARRANTY SO IT WONT COST ME ANYTHING. Scamming would be telling me that its black when its not and that they can change it right now for me for a low price of bullshit.

But I agree the dealership tech doesn't know his shit.
