Picked up my Sport a few days ago. So far I love it. Big difference from my last Wrangler which was a '95. What has been all of you experiences with the back up camera at night? Mine is pretty useless at night. I have a Ford sedan which has great visibility on the camera at night.

Thanks all

If you install aftermarket LED b/u lights the rear view camera, lets say comes to life. With the addition of the LED b/u lights the visual that you are seeing in the day will be similar at night.

There are different way to add the b/u lights. Here is what I chose:

I thought the same thing. I drive a 2016 Durango for work, and that camera is much better. I’m wondering if it’s because the reverse lights are set back compared to the spare tire. Was thinking about getting a new rear bumper with extra LEDs wired to the backup circuit.

You know, that’s actually a great idea for led back up lights. I honestly didn’t think I personally had a reason to get some until now.

Great idea...... thanks :like:

I will say, I think Jeep has undersold the quality of the backup cam on the JL's. Much better than my '15 Audi and better than a lot of other luxury (both foreign and domestic) cars I've been in.

As previously stated in here, I think it's the positioning of the spare tire that gets in the way of the lighting at night time. You still see a tinge of red lighting up the camera at night when you're braking as you're reversing which helps a little. From past experience, it's probably better not to overly rely on the backup cam when it's dark anyways. But yeah, if you brake slightly the brake lights will give you some added light.

Can you give us the details on the aftermarket back up lights? Were they easy to install?

One of the first mods I added was new LED reverse light bulbs, and when I get a decent bumper I'll likely add cubes. The camera itself is very good, it's the lighting that sucks.

It's not really that complicated, one of the 7 pin trailer connections is for trailer reverse lights, so you just tie a relay into that will line up power to the light(s). I'm not sure how well it would work or how it would affect the computer if you tried wiring them in directly.

@mwilk012

No "relay" use with this install.

Depending on install you may need a diode or two in the mix. Again, depends on the install.... say if you want to be able to also activate the b/u lights with an Aux switch.

Install is pretty straight forward, especially if you know what the deed entails. Sure you can botch the install...

CAN bus is not at all upset if you do the install correctly.

I did post a lot on the forum in regard to this install. Forum search engine is so poor (it is very very bad) I can't even search and find the posts...
