For years I've been racing both in California desert and baja sanctioned racing organizations.
I race my 86 CJ7 and have more than held my own in my class.

All I can say on this thread is yes, the wrangler can in fact fly like an eagle.
As the OP mentioned, "Speed + Jeeps aren't a bad thing."
My CJ is powered by a pumped up chevy 350 and 4 on the floor.
The power is definitely there; however, the suspension was not.
If you want to send it consistently and still land on your rubber, the suspension is where you need to look.
My 350 is moderately modified, but the suspension is full tilt modded.
I could have abandoned the front live axle and gone with IFS but felt the urge to keep it old school.
As a former forum member used to say, "keep it jeepy".

The wrangler can fly but thinking that it can perform at competitive speeds with "limited or minimal mods" is laughable at best.
A "prerunner" is not built for speed per se, it is to investigate/map out certian sections of the course. Most of the time a prerunner does not go "at speed" or even close to it.
Most of the time you are in first or second gear (or stopped) while checking out tricky parts of the course or looking for a clean line.
You won't see that while flying down a course.
Prerunners are not race trucks.
For perspective, my prerunner is a sport S.
Engine is stock and the suspension is moderately massaged.

Jeeps are fast as is, but you need much more than a better shock or a lift.
Try racing the Mint 400 or the San Felipe 250 on a slightly modded jeep and prepare to have your chase crew come and find you while you rig is on its back... or worse.

Also:
There are a time and place for sending your rig in the air.
Public trails where others are rock crawling/overlanding are definitely not it.
Folks who like to run like the wind on shared trails are Richards...
We need pics of the race CJ, including suspension if you don't mind?

Hey @yokramer - think I've figured this one out. Why don't people like people who like to "go fast" in stockish Jeeps? It's the exact same demographic as the chodes who run over bystanders in their Mustangs at Cars & Coffee events. Guarantee there's a crossover in tribal tattoos, flat billed hats, and an overuse of hair products.

Dudes and dudettes who cut Jeeps up and turn them into race vehicles? Typically cool, not bombing around on public trails or roads at a hundred miles an hour. Know that there's a time and place for speed and handle it appropriately.

I watched that several times and I’m pretty sure the bystander that took the most direct hit was able to hold on to his Mountain Dew so that’s a win. The emergency rations bag of Cheetos in his front pocket…not so much.

Whew that was close, I thought we were about to have another upskirt debacle on the forum
Mustang bro after hitting her to his buddy in the passenger seat:

God some people just have ZERO self preservation instincts.

Oh hey look at that heavy chunk of metal slowly rolling towards me lets just stand here and see what happens.

I mean really they should have seen the Mustang badge and just hid behind a tree from the start

To calculate kinetic energy, you multiply velocity times mass. IF you double the mass but main tthe same velocity, you produce double the kinetic energy. But if you double the velocity and retain the same mass, you have quadrupled the kinetic energy. Thats why residential neighborhoods have 25mph speed limits, because in impacts over 25 mph the pederstrian survival rate plummets. And it's why ball players should swing the heaviest bat which does not affect their swing velocity. So as people have stated in this thread, speed is expensive.

Nail on the head right there. As a mechanic I’ve generally always been a “right tool for the job” kind of person. Yeah, you can build or modify many things to try and accomplish whatever it is you’re going for, but at what point does it stop being what it was.

I remember looking at magazine builds when I was a teen and rolling my eyes when I found out there was literally nothing original left of the cover vehicle. Magazine covers were the “Click Bait” of the 1990’s.
You touched a chord with me. My interest in 4-wheeling started before 10 when I read about the Baja 500 in Popular Mechanics. 55 years later I am living it; prepp'ing my Raptor to run Baja with TRR or EXO guys in the near-er future (i've already waited 55 years).
Thanks!

Hey, no time like the present. I remember reading about the Baja in “Dirt Wheels” when I was 12 and thinking that would be a blast. My interest started around the same time with a copy of “Peterson’s 4-Wheel and Off-road“. A square-body Blazer on gigantic TSL’s wrapped around 16” polished Mickey Thompsons. Those were the days.

Today I learned that ~4.5 second 0-60 vehicles are no longer considered "fast". Yep, it's all relative.

They suck balls when you put curves in the mix, but that's true for pretty much anything from US-based Stellantis companies.

Man, I miss my '99 10AE Miata. It sure as hell wasn't fast, but fuck yeah it was fun!
The miata wasn't fast in a straight line, but you'd be hard pressed to find anything in its price range that could keep up on the corners. Weirdly not only is 4.5s 0-60 not fast, the Bronco Raptor is a better choice if you want to go fast... with its 6.5s 0-60. Some how their 418hp/440ftlbs are still slower than the pentastar JL with its 285hp 0-60... but Jeeps aren't fast.
