How Do You Carry Extra / Emergency Mopar Coolant?

Hello,

For over 15 years, across too many vehicles, I have always carried a spare gallon of Mopar coolant. The 50/50 pre-mixed coolant. Unopened. Several months ago I had one leak. Again, I had never opened it, the foil seal was not disturbed. After that, I grabbed an open one I had, it was filled about 85-90%, and I discovered today that it leaked. The lid was on tight. I carry the gallon, along with a few other fluids/sprays, in a Blue Ridge Overland Gear Oil Bag.

I just spent too much time on Google looking for a heavier duty one gallon container. I considered a new Rotopax but it seems their water containers are not lined, and their fuel containers are only lined for the intended fuel. I cannot find an industrial / heavier duty container anywhere. Do any of you have such an issue?

I carry all of my fluids including a gallon of Mopar engine coolant in the tall Milwaukee Packout container on the left. I also had a new unopened gallon of Mopar engine coolant leak on me. But it was all contained in the Packout, and just rinsed out afterwards.

First, thanks for the reply and the tip. I do not have my JL outfitted like that but your kit is neat. The oil bag kept it contained, so good on BROG. But I do not understand how we both had new sealed containers leak! That seems like it defeats the purpose. I promise you I am not driving more than 100' below sea level, and not more than 15,000 feet above. It should not leak.

I agree, it shouldn't leak. I had another new container of Mopar engine coolant at home that I put in the Packout to replace the one that had leaked. I checked the cap before putting it in and found that it wasn't even tight at all. I tightened it securely and so far this one hasn't leaked.

And here I thought I was being prepared by actually buying a spare gallon of MS.90032 50/50 coolant just to have on hand.

Think if I was going to carry some around I'd probably store it in a Rotopax mounted to the side window or near/on the spare tire rather than trying to safely secure it somewhere inside the vehicle. Wonder if you could slide it under one of the front seats from the back so it doesn't slide out the front? Still don't like the idea of carrying heavy fluid-filled containers inside though. Just seems like a potential mess (or projectile) waiting to happen.

No reason for me to carry coolant. @3TV has some.

Seriously, I just carry tap water. 4 gallons of it. It's for drinking mainly or washing up. But in the rare event that I need to add water, I'll use it without worry if that's all I had. If I had to add a large amount as in a hose break or change, I would run the water until I returned home where I could flush and refill with coolant. If I had to add a little, I'd just use the water. No harm no foul. The existing coolant has plenty of anti-corrosion additives to not worry.

A bigger worry than carrying coolant is radiator hoses, and that's not all that much worry these days. But how many of you carry the spare upper and lower hoses?

Just store the jug in a small plastic storage bin. Easy peazy.

My experience of carrying liquids in the military and civilian world has taught me that most plastic containers/jugs will leak. They develop micro holes in the bottom from the constant rubbing and slowly leak out their contents. Sometimes you can squeeze the bottle and see the leak but not always. The best way is to transfer the fluid from the original container into something better. Most of the time I use Nalgene 32oz wide mouth bottles. The can be found as low as $9 if you don't care about color. The Ultralite are okay but they can develop leaks.

amen..I once upon a time worked as a lab tech in a paper mill and we used nalgene bottles to carry chemicals that would eat you to the bone if it came in contact with your skin. you could drop an industrial nalgene bottle full of acid off a 300' high digester and it would not break open...I have a few of those around but even these rei branded nalgenes have stood the test of time...I think they are around 30 years old and still going strong...also the cool think is if you write Pee bottle don't drink on the side no one will ever steal your water bottle.....

I use Rotopax containers. They're not lined, nor is there any mention of that in the online ad copy. The containers are purchased by color, according to the liquids they're intended to safely store. In fact, but for the color differences, all of the containers are made of the same materials.

I would trust the brand to carry coolant, for example. They're reassuringly robust. I've carried my red Rotopax fuel container on the top rack of my dual sport. It didn't live an easy life in that location, but I also didn't lose a drop of fuel.

I'll also use it to carry spare gas during camp-and-ride weekends.

The issue with Rotopax is they start at one gallon and only get bigger. Not very helpful if you need a quart or two of a few different things.
