ECRI permanent replacement for SWG and leaving it installed

I recently purchased an ECRI module which allows a Jeep owner to bypass the factory SWG. The ECRI manufacture recommends you install it in place of the SWG to allow the use of Bi-directional scan tools, JScans and other tools that let the owner work with their Jeep.

Once your done they recommend placing the SWG back in place. I really don't believe leaving the ERCI installed and eliminating the SWG would cause any problems other then leaving the vehicle vernerable to a possible hack through the connect system. After all, those with Tazers in effect have the same situation.
I believe this reinstallation of the SWG is really unnecessary and recommended just to protect themselves incase someone hacks the ERCI equipped vehicle.

I seem to always be tweaking my Jeep with my Jscan and hate having to unplug, replug, bla, bla, bla, you get the picture. Its would be so nice just to plug into the obd2 port and do whats needed instead of having to do extra steps. Maybe someone else has already done this?

I appreciate your suggestion but I don't want to be screwing around with cables, including extension cables under the dash. I just want to plug into the OBD2 port and rock and roll!
The ZAutomotive security gateway extension cable is a terrific ad.

Read here about it / how it fits into the scheme of thing do to speak..
https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/fo...teway-extension-cable-use-explained-âžż.111159/

The ZAutomotive, SGW extension cable is a nice add for use when the day(s) ahead, when you do need to re-establish the security gateway say for a dealership visit. No reason to buy this offering, if you don't mind fooling with the SGW connection point way up there..

Another real nice add when you have/use an ECRI, SGW module is this holder..

@RoadNomad

I have been running with a dedicated security gateway bypass module in place 24/7/365 for approx. 6 years now. Never ever any shortcoming doing so.

I often use JSCAN, etc..

I have a JeepSnapCaps holder for the dedicated module and also have a ZAutomotive security gateway extension cable installed. ..... Why the extension cable.... because I want the ability to re-establish the security gateway in seconds and with very little effort on my part. Why the holder.... because it is an easy access clean way to install/mount the module. Someday, I will resell both and re-coop most of the $ I spent on the adds.

YES, you must to remove the dedicated SGW module and re-establish the security gateway when you take the vehicle to the dealership service dept. for work you want them to do.

YES, you can leave the module in place say if your JL has to go in to say a New York State Inspection Center/ other State Inspection Centers for State vehicle inspection. The computer the Inspection Centers attach to your JL plays aok with a JL that has the security gateway bypassed.

For those interested,,,, ECRI offers a dedicated security gateway bypass module offering and so does ZAutomotive. The ECRI offering is priced lower then the ZAutomotive offering. BOTH offerings are very good.

JeepSnapCaps offers a holder for this offering also.

Dedicated security gateway bypass modules are the more current way to deal with security gateway bypass duties. Sure you can use old school, antiquated, iffy, clunky, large footprint Chrysler 12+8 Programming cables... but in today's day and age they are laughable at best.

Just to clarify - do I need to remove the Zauto "extension cable" before going to the dealer, or just the ECRI and then plug the extension cable into the factory ports?

Also - is the ECRI supposed to light up when in use? It looks like the letters may be illuminated, but mine aren't . (I just installed it with the Zauto cable but haven't hooked in the ODB reader yet).

Thanks - your timing on this was perfect!

I have the ECRI and I have left the bypass module installed for months now to no ill effect. I also have the extension cable, just haven't bothered to connect it yet.

@MPTee yes the ODB part is supposed to light up, not the gateway module. You should not need to remove the extension cable before going to the dealer, that's the point of it - it's a PITA to reach up under the dash to access the gateway module plug (at least on the 2024s).

Perfect - thanks for the quick response.
One more thing if I may semi-hijack this thread....
When adjusting the tire diameter reading on Jscan, so I do the tire on or off the vehicle? (with vehicle weight or without). There is about a 1/2' difference on my 315/70/17 KO2s.
Thanks.

Do you have the Jscan or the ECRI?

With the ECRI, I used the auto calibrate feature which determines your exact tire size be comparing your speedometer against your GPS speed. It dialed me in perfectly - my speedo now reads exactly what I get on an iPhone speedometer app, and the radar speedos the police occasionally setup on local roads.

I have both - Jscan and ECRI. I believe (believed) that the ECRI was just a portal for my ODB reader to get into the jeep, after which I'd use the JScan app to control the features I wanted.
I think.

I wanted to respond to the person who was asking if the ERCI bypass lights up.
According to the instructions included with the unit I just received last week "IT DOES NOT".

I will confirm this after I install it this week, perhaps an earlier revision did, and if it did perhaps the manufacture removed that feature. Doesn't really make much difference because it hidden under the dash anyway and would just use battery power to light up.

To answer the previous question, the reason you should get the Z Automotive cable *IN ADDITION TO* the ECRI box is to make it easier to remove/reinstall the ECRI whenever you need (dealer visit, etc).

The Z Automotive cable is just an extension cord - it basically relocates where you plug the ECRI into. It's specifically designed to look like an OEM cable.
