what I think it means is the new software will scale back the emissions while driving in real life and not just to pass the smog test. Lower power & less mpg?
If you believe what Cali and the EPA are saying, the amount of emissions that these specific engines are producing during normal driving conditions suggests they alone are responsible for the polar ice caps melting. The actual wording they used is genuinely hilarious.
Reference: Electrek: EV Rag

I’m sure it’ll be software that ends up doing something similar to what was introduced against the Gen 2 EcoDiesel, but I don’t think it’s gonna be on the same scale of ā€˜detuning’.

I agree we need to go after them. We punished VW and made it front and center news for years. Plus, the emissions test changed after what VW did. So, everyone knew what was going to happen. To bypass that emissions test was super easy and VW figured it out along with others. All they had to do were a few things since they were not tested on the road but on a chassis dyno.
1. For a FWD car, as long as the rear wheel speed sensors were reading zero, then the ECU went to engine map 2. Thus more pollution.
2. Use the three axis accelerometer. When X reads zero (which means the car is not moving), go to engine map 2.

In the end, they should have just recalled all of the offenders and fixed it. Yet they just waited around. This would be like if manufacturers decided to disable the airbags while you are driving. I guess that would be OK?

Just because the Government won doesn't mean Cummins did anything wrong BTW. In fact any time the Government says somebody did something wrong then won't provide any evidence of the wrongdoing you should be looking even closer at what really happened. The Government keeps repeating their claim about Cummins "defeat devices" while no providing no proof of their claims.

In a just world Cummins should be able to counter-sue for the Government for defamation after their petty press-conference the other day too. It is completely out of line and uncalled for behavior. Despicable bureaucrats all around honestly chasing after a company that actually did nothing wrong and then gloating about it like a bunch of pack animals. They did it just to gloat and nothing of value was brought to light.

Fuck CARB and the EPA. I'm not even a diesel evangelist but these people are power hungry sick in the head rats.

I have an impacted Cummins powered vehicle. No way do I allow a change to the emissions equipment on an out of warranty vehicle…. Not gonna happen. I realize that for some states it is mandatory. But luckily not for me…

Only CA is requiring proof of recall work to renew registrations because of course they are.

The job of a politician is to be elected and re-elected. To that end they will do what gets them campaign funds and public support. Common sense laws don’t get people elected. Clean air is more important here in California than diesel horsepower. People that have money here can drive a Tesla or Rivian with ridiculous power. Acting like we don’t need to worry about our emissions because China doesn’t is like not cleaning your house because your neighbors don’t.

So they pay $2B, recall trucks and change the software. What’s that mean?

The truck with new software will pass the smog inspection?

Will it put out less emissions with the updated software?
Almost certainly it will now consume MORE fuel, so while the emissions per gallon ā€œmayā€ go down, the number of gallons burned will increase. Seen it before. (Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain). More smoke and mirrors which will cost the consumer $$ and make little to no difference overall. Same as ā€œethanolā€ enhanced gasoline. We make it from corn, meaning less food stocks, while at the same time being basically a one to one exchange ( takes a gallon of fuel to ā€œgetā€ a gallon of ethanol), plus the mpg’s of the vehicle actually drop due to lower energy in ethanol vs gasoline. Brazil runs neat ethanol in their cars, BUT they make it from sugar cane-one gallon of fuel input yields what, 7 gallons out? That makes sense. The wau we do it is simple mental gymnastics to make the green folks and the farmers happy?

You'll have to take my E85 from my cold dead hands! It's one of the easiest and cheapest to source race fuels available to the general public. I don't care a bit about the green weenies but it is an amazing fuel for high hp/performance applications.

Victim verification— when ā€œClean Gasā€ was introduced my V10 Dodge PU dropped from 13- 14 mpg to 8- 9 mpg. I took it to Dodge to find and correct. After extensive testing It’s the new gas, and the bigger the engine the worse the loss, sorry. Many performance upgrades brought it up to 11-12 mpg with substantial torque and moderate HP gains. So the ā€œclean gasā€ produced less emissions per gallon, uh- I was burning 35% more gallons— real world total emissions ? ?

Where widely available- I haven’t seen it at a station in many years here in Ca. and this career intrastate trucker has seen much of it, but have heard of a handful in the Bay Area - unverified. ? Also 91 top widely available octane, no alcohol also not available ?

I haven't been to CA since...2017 at least? Since then the farthest west I've been is probably Dallas TX. But where I live the closest E85 is only .36 miles away as the crow flies according to google earth. It's less than half that distance if I only want to get 93 octane.

The last time I criticized California I got banned…….so let me just say it again. I hope Ca breaks off the continental shelf and sinks into the pacific. Beautiful state wasted on the dimmest and worst generation of shitheads.

Braggart ! — the farthest east I have been is Dallas TX, and we still had 100+ Octane here— but not for long. CA has made a hard

TX hasn’t— yet— I see that the powers that be are attempting to ā€œremedyā€ that
