I just checked my oil on the 2024 JL sport. It has 1200 miles on the gage. It is way over full, by at least 2 quarts, this is the way it came to me from the dealer. I then checked the oil pressure gage. At 158 degrees the oil at idle,1200 R.P.M., is 17 pounds P.S.I Is this acceptable? Will over fill, and low pressure do much damage ?

Its time for the initial 1000-mile oil change anyway (if you haven't already).

My Audi was easy to check, just go to the oil level screen on the infotainment system. Could get a reasonable oil level idea while driving down the roadway. Did not trust it so I bought a dipstick. They agreed between the 2 close enough for my needs.

Now for the Wrangler and everything else in the family fleet I just pop the hood and pull the stick hot or cold to get a basic idea. I know it was not overfilled as I do it myself.

What side motor do you have? My 2.0 reads high on my dipstick. I questioned the dealer and they said that’s how they are after comparing my dipstick to another dipstick and comparing the fluid levels.
Mine is the same

Generally speaking: Oil pans can hold an additional quart. If you are 2 qt up, and you can expect a LOT of windage...what is windage? The crankshaft will start hitting oil and it slows down, making your engine a bit sluggish. It will be throwing oil up into the cylinders and if it gets too much you can have a catastrophic event like breaking a piston rod due to the engine being full of oil instead of water from a river crossing that flooded it and BANG goes the engine.

You do need to get it out of there.

Engines can tolerate +/- a quart, beyond that you need to mitigate by adding or subtracting ASAP...

You cannot wait 2 hours after shutdown to check it or it will give a false reading. As @NWJeepr said, read the OM for the procedure. It is typically check when warm after allowing 5 minutes once shutdown.
The way I look at it is:
Fully cold: you have all the oil for sure
Hot but before 5 minutes: you will be missing some oil because it is in the "system"
Hot but 5 minutes + later: oil should be all in the pan and therefore at the same level as fully cold

Is my logic flawed ?

Your logic is not flawed, it is FCA/Stellantis'

The dipstick has been calibrated to the second condition that you note. However, it will take more than 5 minutes for all of the oil to drain down. If you said 15-20 minutes+ for your 3rd point, it would be 100%.

Than my assumption is partially wrong, do you have any logic insight for the selection of such a approximative system VS a "absolute" one ?

Umm...it's a Jeep thing?

Seriously, I have no idea why FCA did that. Some of the design decisions that Jeep has made in the past 10 years are asinine at best.

What I think it has accomplished more than anything is owners believing their engines are overfilled partly because:

1. FCA reduced the oil capacity from 6QTs to 5QTs when the 2017 redesign happened (3.6L).
2. Nearly everyone is used to checking the level when the engine is cold and all of the oil is in the pan.

I had a dealership oil change today, the paperwork said they put in 6qt, I questioned it and they said the correct amount is 5.8qt, that’s what they fill to.

Everything I find on-line says 5qt max, what’s the right answer here?

I had a similar "learning experience" when my wife and I owned Harley-Davidson motorcycles. My wife had a Forty-Eight with an oil tank as opposed to a true oil pan. The oil had to be checked when the oil temperature reached a certain level five minutes after being shut down.

The right answer is change the oil yourself, remind your service advisor prior to handing him the keys, or find a new dealer. Some people here have put a label on the oil filler cap noting 5 quarts. I buy in a 5 quart jug and spend 20 minutes doing it myself. I know that’s not for everyone.
