I picked my baby up this afternoon after the dealer prepped it and put my new wheels and tires on. Then I synced my phone to the Bluetooth and programmed two of my garage doors to the Home Link transmitter.

I plugged in my old dashboard-top Garmin GPS since the 7” screen is garbage. The only time CarPlay recognizes my iPhone is when I don’t absolutely need a NAV system. Very poor offering by FCA.

Thank you for your feedback! Below are some of the pictures I took during the install. I am fortunate to have a tall ceiling in my attic so I could mount the winch about 9' above the attic floor. The only pictures I haven't taken yet are the frames directly above the holes in the ceiling. I can take additional photos if you want to see more.

Wow Ryan you went all out! Must be a Michigan thing to over build cause I’m the same way lol. Thank you for sharing the pics. I’m building a house with a separate mechanic’s garage next 1 1/2, and will definitely be incorporating a setup like yours to hoist and store my top. Again.... great job!

Check out this link because it was the inspiration for my build and there are good instructions here: http://www.gregwessels.com/2015/06/01/jeep-lift.html
I didn't mount mine the same way but I used mostly the same materials he listed. I also built my system before some of the JL compatible systems were available so I bought everything separately (e.g., pulleys, cable, etc.). It would have been easier if I waited and bought one of those systems, such as the Lange Hoist-A-Top, then replaced the hand crank with the hoist I bought and would have been done. I ended up slightly over $350 when I was done with my build from scratch.

Some tips for the install...
  • After positioning my Jeep in the garage where I wanted to have the hoist installed I took a picture of the location in the backup camera. I then painted a couple of small markings on the floor where the red guidelines lined up so that whenever I back into the garage to take the top off I am parked directly below where I installed the hoist.
  • I used recessed lighting trim in the ceiling so that it would look nice from below. I didn't buy/install the housing for the trim pieces but rather installed a couple of 2x4's between the joists on each side of my hole and screwed the trim piece to the 2x4's from below. I also mounted fairleads to the 2x4's above the trim pieces so that if there was ever any movement from side to side on the load then the fairlead would take the stress and not the trim piece or the drywall. There is a picture below of this setup. I just happened to buy fairleads that were not quite wide enough to fit the chain so I had to remove one of the rollers.
  • I also bought an electric hoist that didn't have long enough cable for the controller and the hoist was not compatible with wireless remote controls. I just spliced into the cable to add 20' to run it into the garage. This probably voided the warranty but for a $125 hoist I would just buy another one if I have issues with it. It has worked just fine with the extended cable so I am not too worried. I could have done some more research and probably spent a little more money on a different hoist to avoid that.
That is all I can think of for now but if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

Very clever the lines on the floor!

I did my 2nd oil change at about 5250 miles yesterday. The first had been done at 2007 miles. I'll be running this oil until mid October, then will do a pre-Moab trip change. I'm guessing there will be about 5k on the oil at that point. After that, I'll go strictly by the oil life monitor.

I just love the 3.6 and manual transmission. They are well matched and a joy to drive.

Did you send your oil for analysis the first time you changed your oil at 2k? I am just curious as to why you changed it after only 3k miles the second time.

Also, it is reassuring to hear great feedback from the manual transmission crowd as I ordered a manual. This is my first jeep and first suv, but all of my previous cars were manuals. I was torn about which choice to make, but ultimately chose the manual even though the auto is probably better on the trail. Here's to hoping I made the right decision.

Could the problem be with Apple? Mine works as advertised with Android Auto. I'd try someone else's phone, too, just to see if it works. It could be something as simple as an app causing trouble.

I'd also turn any battery saving app or mode off. I had some trouble with Waze and it was cured when I turned off battery saving mode.

Hope you get it working.

Yep, I had it done on the factory fill and it was in good shape at 2k miles and it looked like it could have gone the distance, easily. Viscosity was good, with no shearing, and wear metals were high, but normal for break in. Silicone was high, but again, as expected, from it having new sealants and seals.

I just changed it for entertainment , really. I'm a maintenance nerd with my machines.

I'm not in the club that thinks autos are better off road. The manuals in my YJ and JK Rubi never hampered them, even on rocks. The JL Rubi gearing is even better. There has been a quirk discovered in some or maybe all JL autos in low range, too, where it would only upshift manually. (See the Wayolife JL forum's owner. He made a video of it.) They'll probably easily fix that with programming, if they haven't already, though.

You won't regret the manual if you like to shift. You'll smile at every gear change.

Dan - I've enjoyed your posts and inputs since several months back... and a large reason why I am enjoying my (red) Sahara today :) So thanks for your insights.

On the topic of the 3.6 manual, which I have - I was going to post a thread on thoughts/impressions of it, but since I just saw your post, I'll just jump on it now. I love the manual and the 3.6 - it is indeed fun, and there is no need for me to upgrade the shifter, or anything like that. But having a 700hp Mustang 5.0 for the last 7 years as my other toy, driving it on the highway, I never had to take it out of 6th gear. With my new Sahara, I was shocked that I have to constantly downshift to 4th to really get a good whomp on passing. It renders the cruise control I set, kindda useless, because I have to re-engage.

Your thoughts? Is this normal? I might have to put a Magnuson blower on this baby before long... just like my 5.0. :D
