Mm. Depending on the design (i.e., size) of the receiver hitch, its mounting point(s) and particularly its proximity to a fuel tank, a hard rear end collision could in fact serve to push the hitch into the fuel tank, thus increasing the risk of perforation and fire.Years ago a recall was issued for an older Jeep Grand Cherokee model year to install a trailer tow hitch on those Jeeps not equipped with one; it seems that those Grand Cherokee's that were rear ended without tow hitches were prone to catch fire due to fuel tank rupture.
I have never towed anything, but I always buy a vehicle with a trailer tow package. It is a little additional protection for the people if rear ended.
This likely varies from vehicle to vehicle; what is an improvement for a Grand Cherokee may in fact decrease safety in another model.
