This should be interesting.

Stellantis has reportedly stopped stocking combustion-only vehicles in 14 states around the United States. The decision comes following emissions guidelines set by the California Air Resources Board that exceed nationwide standards. That doesn’t mean that customers in these 14 states won’t be able to order a gasoline-powered vehicle from Stellantis, though.
The automaker announced it has stopped allocations of models with internal combustion engines and no electric support to dealerships unless there are specific customer orders. On the other hand, dealers in non-CARB states are no longer able to receive deliveries of plug-in hybrid models without customer orders.
The states that follow emissions guidelines set by the California Air Resources Board are Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington.
"I think many of us expected when the CARB rules actually kick in in 2026 in a meaningful way that we'd have some allocation challenges," Brian Maas, president of the California New Car Dealers Association, told Automotive News. "The fact that it's happening in the middle of 2023 is a bit of a surprise. People are going to go to Reno and Vegas and Phoenix to get ICE Wranglers, if that's what they want."
According to the online publication, Stellantis started changing allocation rules some two months ago. It’s important to note, however, that the CARB rules don’t require companies to start selling a certain percentage of electric vehicles until 2026. Still, experts expect a significant impact on Stellantis’ sales despite the fact that the firm’s dealers have been well-trained to promote plug-in hybrids.
According to the 2023 Census Bureau, about 36 percent of the US population currently lives in the 14 CARB states. Four additional states will adopt the regulations in the near future.

Stellantis is going down.

They must be planning to get out of the car business and start importing cheeses from France and Italy...

Stellantis SUCKS
So stupid....I see California and the usual like-minded states are spearheading these changes. This will seriously be my last Jeep. Stellantis is the last car company on the planet I would trust as being a purveyor of EV. Maybe they should master 12 Volt car battery technology first since they clearly got that wrong with the JL.

That’s what we get when two companies that FAILED in North America, Fiat and Peugeot, are again in charge of running the business in North America.

Right now jeep/dodge/ram dealerships have excessive inventory, that may be playing into it. The local dealership to me is actually running rebates/discounts on jeeps and rams. Something I have not seen for a while. Their lot is as full as I have ever seen jt

I would bet this policy may change if suddenly there is a run on jeep and Ram products and demand goes up.

The article did say this didn't have to be done till 2026. Wonder why they chose to do this now ?

So.. you'll no longer be able to walk into a dealer in Michigan and buy a 4xe? And no longer be able to just buy a non-4xe Wrangler off the lot in PA? And if so, you'll instead have to place a special order and wait a few months?

This sounds incredibly fucking dumb and unnecessarily limiting for a lot of consumers.

Virtue signaling? I can't think of a sound business reason for this.

The way I read it, only Wrangler you'll be able to just buy off the lot is the 4xe. EVs or hybrids only, or special order.

Which if youre an informed buyer you should be special ordering a Wrangler anyway.

Yeah, in those 14 states. And in the all the others, if you actually do want a 4xe, you'll have to special order one.

People hanging out at a JL Wrangler forum online mostly do place special orders, but even still, not everyone here does that and I doubt the vast majority of regular folks buying Wranglers do either. Forcing those people to wait several months to buy a new vehicle or travel out of state to get the drivetrain they want isn't a smart idea imo.

Seems dumb to jump the gun by 2 model years? Unless they are trying to get voters in all these states to push back on the new CARB rules early enough to stop them from ever going in to effect? If that's the case, it's brilliant especially if it works. Could be the proof of concept to get the same push back from the public in time to stop the end of ICE sales before the 2035 deadline already set.
