As I progress through installing Dana Spicer CrMo front axle shafts in the Grinch, I wanted to understand the metal composition of the OEM inner shaft and FAD collar since DS does not sell a CrMo version as a part of their front axle "kit" (or separately for that matter).

I brought the inner shaft and FAD collar to CMS in the Denver area and they determined the inner shaft is not CrMo as I was lead to believe by a DS tech engineer. However, the FAD collar does have some CrMo making it similar to 8620 steel.

So now you know...

The OE shafts are right around a 1541 grade of carbon steel.

The Dana aftermarket shafts cromo and have the bigger 1410 U-Joints.

Plus much beefier yokes (not all of it attributable to the 1410 ujoints).

Yes, the yokes are much bigger!

OE JL/JT on left, aftermarket Dana cromo on the right.

Better throw some links in here:

Left Electric Locker:

Right w/ Electric Locker NO FAD:

For clarity though, none of the DS CrMo shaft kits retain the FAD--they are both FAD Delete.

The difference is one comes with the FAD Delete kit (block off plate, gasket, bolts, and new FAD collar) and the other does not.
