So I am looking at possibly getting a wrangler. I had one back in 90 when I came home from the service. I joined here to learn more about the current wranglers. I would like to give a little background and through some Q and A get an idea of what model and features I might want.
First off I will admit that I don't see a lot of off roading in my future. Not a lot of trails near Rochester, NY. I am most attracted to the wrangler because I like the way it looks. I like that it is a box on wheels. Because I like the box I am most attracted to the 2DR. When I had a wrangler a hundred years ago 2DR was it. I loved driving that thing because of how small and maneuverable it was. Loved the turning radius. I am also attracted to the wrangler because I think it would be great for our snowy winters and I can put the top down in summer. As I said I don't necessarily need the most capable off road rig but I do like the look of the bigger tires on the Rubicon and Willy's.
So I guess my starting point here is what model would you guys recommend? What features should I make sure I include? I am able to drive a stick but I also want the convenience of remote start... our winters can be brutal. I am leaning toward a 2DR for the reasons mentioned above but any other guidance would be appreciated.

Don’t do it Rick. Jeeps are basically an addiction. You start small and then before you know it you are upgrading every last part. Don’t believe me, ask @Jeepeto on this thread. Here he was with his 2dr sport like you are looking at enjoying it like crazy and now he is in a $70K 4dr monster with all kinds of goodies strapped on. I AM TOTALLY KIDDING ?
You will love the JL platform. I had an older TJ that was great but after driving a JLU, I had to upgrade ??
I think Willys as mentioned is an awesome package for what you get.

Willys jl. 3.6 without etorque. ( you can order it with the 8-speed ) dealer might fight but it is possible. And the cold weather package. Seat warmers and steering wheel would treat you nicely On those cold days

Not to go off-topic, but your "vehicles" answer says "Cybertruck". Such an animal doesn't exist in the wild yet.

+1 on the full Willy's.

The Willys is a good model. Auto, cold weather pkg, remote start, premium soft top, LED lighting pkg is a must - the halogen headlights are not good. You’ll spend just as much replacing them with good aftermarket options, so just order them with the vehicle. If you ever want/plan to tow with the vehicle order the tow pkg w/heavy duty electrical. You can add the tow hitch aftermarket, but from the factory it comes with a heavy duty alternator/ cooling which increases the towing capacity. I’d also recommend upgrading the audio to the alpine, the standard audio pkg is not very good.

Rick, as the ‘90 pop rock group Roxette once proclaimed, listen to your heart. I sincerely hope you join us in this wonderfully intoxicating addiction. The Jeep addiction that is, not the Roxette one.

My vote is for a 3.6/8A Willy’s with LED, Cold Weather, Tow/Auxiliary, and most importantly in a color which allows for the dual door (aka: half doors) group.

Half doors aren’t generally available any other way except via factory special order and there are folks who will buy them from you if they aren’t your cup of tea.

Get it get it get it get it get it
I changed my opinion, don't get it. When you buy a Jeep Wrangler of any trim, it becomes BUY, BUY, BUY!!!!!!!! Then you start thinking "how hard is it to press out a ring and pinion and rebuild a diff". 35's are nice, 40's are nicer. LOL!

Assuming that you don’t go with a 2wd (assuming that that’s even possible anymore. I don’t know), your commuting and off-roading needs will be met by any model. You need to make a list of must have bells and whistles and purchase whatever model it is that is available with them.

Go to the Jeep site and look at the models and "Build" the one you want. Want tires bigger than what is on a Willy's? Get a sport and buy the ones you want. Power windows? Sport S. But add the limited slip rear for driving in snow.
They really have the models sorted out pretty well.
