I ordered a 2 door Rubicon last week (now need to sell my ‘09 JK) and do not want or need the backup camera. I use my sparetire to haul bikes via a spare tire carrier that utilizes the center hub where the camera is located. I really don’t want to go back to a hitch mount either to haul bikes

Has anyone removed the backup camera yet? If so were there any issues with the uninstall.

Why is it “not a good idea?”

The sight lines on wranglers is fantastic and having never had a backup camera I won’t know what I’m missing

I'm curious - why is it not a good idea? I preferred my spare mount bike rack, but decided to keep the camera and picked up a swing out + hitch style bike rack. Just wondering what your reason was - resale or concern over systems glitches by removing the camera?

It’s a bad idea because you can adapt the bike carrier to allow the use of both. Further, if you’ve ever had a 37 on the tailgate and are backing up in trail or neighborhood with kids around , only takes one scare and you’ll wish you had it.

Cyclone88; that was my initial question as well, what exactly are the issue of anyone has done this yet.

On a side note I’ve been looking for hitch mounts but want/need something that can stand up to off road use as well. What swingout did you end up with? I’ve been looking at swing-down style, 1up made in USA and these made down under http://www.isi-carriers.com/customers/isi-bicycle-carrier-customers.html

I went with the Kuat swing out and a lighter model rack. I don't need to worry about off-road/heavy duty bike racks, most of that travel is highway for me (I don't mountain bike anyway). I figured with how the Wrangler tailgate swings out, it'd be easy to get a swing away hitch than trying to find (or spending the premium) on a heavy duty, tilt-down style rack.

It’s going to be as simple as disconnecting a wiring harness ... so have at it. But I just think it’s an engineering problem that will likely be solved in time allowing
You to utilize both... back op cam
Is something I’ve beem wanting in a wrangler since 2013.... and even then the aftermarket units for
Jk were decent but low resolution and required a jail break.

I've never had a backup camera - going to take me a while to get used to it. Always had to depend on my old-fashioned eyeballs before, having the camera is a luxury that I'm mostly enjoying for backing into my garage ;)

Thanks, appreciate the opinion as your comments makes sense. That said, any spare tire carrier worth a crap uses the center hub to mount and that’s where the camera is.

My JL wont be ready until the end of May, early June so I have yet to continue to research this...... is it June yet

What about fabbing a bracket that used the lugs instead of the center hub?

My friend James fabs stuff for me
All the time. Sounds
Like you can use a flange and weld the mount to that boom.

JK didn’t require a jailbreak, just needed to ask the dealer to add it to your VIN to make the feature available on the stock head unit.

I agree it’s handy for seeing around the edges and the spare tire, and a collapsed soft-top, but anyone who’s really wanted one could have had it added for under $200 and an hour’s effort.

Rather have it than not, especially if already installed, but to each their own.
