Young ones may not know where the Wrangler Sahara comes from.

Browsing through Instagram it reminded me how Sahara got started as the “dressy” trim level on the original Wrangler, the YJ...back in the 1980s.

The original Sahara consisted of a dress-up package available in limited colors with a unique interior, camel top, painted fenders and special fender stickers. There was a particularly striking color combination that added a unique camel-and-green interior.

Over the years, Sahara has remained the “classier” Wrangler. In 2003, Jeep added the Rubicon as the top trail version with a rear locker, and making the hood decal a characteristic of that model ever since.

The fender stickers and painted fender flares have remained a trademark of Saharas ever since.

Oh wow! I didn't know it started with the YJ. My first encounter with a Sahara was a TJ, and I thought that's where it began.

Very cool. Did not know when the trim started, but I do have a Sahara 2018 and love it. I'm close to upgrading the tires to K02's, probably next summer. I love the all-tan interior, I wich mine had that. Its just the seats. Doors and dash are really nice looking.

This is almost identical with the Sahara I bought back in ‘88

The Renegade was the first Jeep with a hood decal. YJ Laredos also had hood decals. In YJs, the Laredo was the fanciest one. The Sahara was more of a safari oriented trim just below the Laredo.

The Islander and Sahara trims were very popular with distaff Jeep owners when YJs were new. I was content with my '95 S.

I read somewhere that originally, the Sahara trim was going to be called the Banana Republic, but Jeep didn’t work out the trademark with them and ended up going with Sahara.

That’s funny, because Banana Republic was what I was going to compare it to. Back when the Sahara Wrangler first came out, they used to sell clothes that were the travel/safari/hunting type, but nice instead of military style. Now they just sell bland semi dress clothes for skinny people. Similarly, the current Sahara has lost the original style and gone to more of a semi luxury yet not too anything styling.

Worth noting the nameplate has not been continuous since it was introduced in 1988, as the Sahara trim was dropped from 2005-06

When i got my YJ i thought of the Sahara as the Barbie Dream Safari Jeep. But as i got older i grew to appreciate it more. They were also selling the Rio Grande edition at the time.

mine was a ‘94 SE. loved that Jeep.

TJ Rubicon was more than a rear locker and sticker... it also had rear LSD, front locker, 4:1 transfer case, front D44, 4.10 gears

Yeah I figured the original Sahara would stir up some memories.

I was only a teenager when Sahara appeared, but I think it was the first time I paid attention to a Wrangler.
