This is my first Wrangler and I'm loving that every other Wrangler on the road is giving me waves when I'm out driving. I also had a fair number of JK and even TJ owners approach me and ask for my opinion on the JL. It's been really fun.

This morning I had an awkward encounter at a red light. As I was sitting there, I looked across the intersection and saw an orange Renegade looking over at me. As soon I glanced his way, the wave came up. It felt like a desperate plea for validation - like when a nerdy guy waves to the hottest girl in school when he thinks she's looking his way.

Me being the guy I am, I threw a wave back his way. But now I'm wondering if this is a breach of protocol. Are Wranglers the only Jeeps that exchange waves? Are Jeeps supposed to only wave to like models? Are Renegades even considered Jeeps?

Wave to whomever you wish...except Hummers. That's an offense against nature.

I've narrowed it down to CJs/Wranglers/XJs, and full-sized Jeeps (the old trucks, Wagoneers, etc). Occasionally a Commander, more often a Grand Cherokee.

Oops, forgot, definitely a Comanche, but I almost never see one.

General Rules:

1. All Jeepers are responsible for upholding the tradition of the Wave. It seems that generally the Jeep wave is only practiced by Jeep owners driving the following Jeep vehicles; CJ, YJ, TJ, JK.

2. All Jeepers are required to return the Wave even if it's a Grand Cherokee or Compass.

3. Do not EVER wave to Hummers, even if you know the person.

Wranglers, CJ's, and maybe extremely modified other Jeeps (like XJ's). That's it. Least in my book. Don't pretend you're driving a real Jeep with a 2wd Compass, and don't expect a wave haha

FWIW, every Jeep forum has at least one megathread on waving that results in lots of frustration. If I ran the JL forum I'd make a waving best practices post, disallow replies, and remove all threads that pop up.

While I do not normally initiate the Jeep wave with non-wranglers/CJs I am not above waving back at someone in a different Jeep model. I pray I will never get into that kind of snobbery where I turn my nose up at a Renegade or a Patriot. If you take an honest look at the Trail Rated crossover Jeeps, you'll see they're pretty good off road and they're only beaten in capability by The Wrangler.

Plus, I've probably waved at a 4x2 JK without even realizing it.

Different Jeep models are the right fit for different people but the brand as a whole embraces the ideas of freedom and adventure and that applies to most everyone who drives one regardless of which model they can afford or what makes economical sense for them and their family. Anyone who waves to me in a Jeep of any type will always receive a Jeep wave and a big smile from me in return.

Agree completely. Try to be inclusive. Wave or don't wave. Don't need permission regarding who to wave to.
