Removing the front lower Airdam

Has anyone with a Sport or Sahara removed the front airdam below the bumper?

Mine was trimmed on my 14 to allow for 33” tires without a lift.

Curious to hear what people say on the new JLs.

The reason I will be removing the air dam is that I will also be replacing the front fender as soon as more aftermarket ones are available, preferably with a good skid plate.

I took the plastic air dam, the thin metal behind it, and the plastic inserts between the fenders and front bumper off. Made it look so much better!

Gosh, it does look better without the air dam.

My biggest fear with these, is reversing in deep snow or mud and having them ripped partially off. Then you have a dangly bit on the front until you can get underneath it with tools to get it off.


I took mine off on my JK almost immediately. I like how it had that boxed steel beam underneath for actual protection. It looks like there’s nothing like that on the JL, so the tie rod will be the first thing to hit a rock or stump.

That thin piece of plastic is not protecting anything, lol . My Jeep was on the trail the day after I bought it and several times since. If you were to come down on a rock it would smash right through the plastic or rip off.

Not really.....

It’s for aerodynamics.

At most it will give you a 1 foot warning that you’re going to shove a rock into the tie rod by making a bad noise. If it’s soft enough to be pushed out of the way by that thin plastic, it was never a threat to the steering or axle.
