Jeep Wrangler JL 🎉Drive Down Memory Lane with Dad: Share Your Best Rides Together IMG_5550

This is a photo from April 2002. My father and my 1985 CJ-7.

I had gotten myself stuck in the mud the night before, and ended up hiking off the mountain with my buddy (who also got stuck). Expected my dad to be upset/annoyed with me when he had to come pick me up an hour away and give us a ride home; but he wasn’t.

Instead, he spent the next day at church rounding up a posse of his friends to come help dig us out. Before you know it there were like 14 of us up there; digging/pushing/winching and we got my jeep and my friends jeep (a 1999 XJ) unstuck and back up on the trail. Dad said he’d had a lot of fun, and wanted to know if he could drive the CJ out. He wanted to get one, but being of modest means it just wasn’t in the cards for him.

He and I didn’t always see eye to eye, especially at that point in my life, but we bonded that day, over the Jeep.

9 months later, my dad passed away unexpectedly. We never got out off-roading after this one trip, something I deeply regret.

I still miss him every day.

Now I’ve got a 2021 JL and my own son bought himself a 1994 YJ and you can bet the two of us get out together whenever we can. It’s keeping us close. I attribute the concept of bonding over off-roading to my father. And I’m sure he’s with my son and I often…

In this case I am the father with my kids because I never did cool Jeep stuff with my dad :(

Unfortunately I don't have a picture but it is still a fun memory. My first JL was Fat Ninja... a 2018 manual in Ocean Blue, purchased from fellow forum member @chevymitchell.

Shortly after moving to UT my son came out for a visit and helped me install American Adventure Labs fender chop and thin line LED kit. Within hours of installing that we went out to Sand Hollow to wheel Double Sammy.
I looked at my son and said "you wanna try" to which he exuberantly replied "YEAH!". I started guiding him up an obstacle and he asked "are you sure that's the line you want me on?" and I was like "yeah you should be OK."... CRUNCH!!! There went the brand new LED and corner of the fender that was just modified hours ago. He looked at me and said "you told me to go there!!!!"
I made him run out to pick up the new LED and we laughed it off and put it in the memory bucket :)

I also took my other son and daughter on John's Trail and asked them to take some good pics of the Jeep. They screamed often from the backseat and my daughter wound up walking most of the trail. After we were done I said let me see the pics. There were TONS of backseat selfies of the two of them and ONE pic of my Jeep. I asked where are all the pics of my Jeep and they said "Oh, we didn't really like them so we deleted them."... kids... SMH.

No pics- grew up riding in Dad’s 3A, taught to drive when I could reach the pedals, first vehicle to drive with license in 67, spent Tuesday nights with his Jeeper and other buddies at his commercial garage. had it for 20 years after him, passed down. Great grandkids that never saw him next….. Grandpa’s 21 to be added. 😊

Don't mind me, vicariously living thru all of your experiences. I never did any cool shit with my dad, I honestly can't remember a single moment spent with him, so these stories are really nice to read. I hope that one day I can be the dad to take my kids out in my Jeep.

No picture as well with my pop. However a nice story...planning dads birthday. I wanted him to experience the naked jeep feeling as when I was looking to replace my current vehicle he kept edging me to get a Subaru or Honda. Fast forward to the time of his b-day, I proceeded to take the top and doors off then headed to his place and we loaded up all our guns and ammo. We stopped by Chicago's pizza for a bite before headed out to the range. Along the way in town another older jeep (naked) pulled up next to us with a couple ladies that shared some kind words before the light turned green. I took the back roads out to the range and many other jeeps along the way waving at us and such, my dad saying that is cool to see these people paying attention to the other jeeps driving and wave like that. We wrap up the plinking and head back home on a perfect 80 degree day and a cool breeze. Ever since that day dad always says what a sharp vehicle it is and how much fun he had experiencing the wrangler feeling. I know I'll always remember that time with him as well.

I still remember when my Dad would take us out in his Isuzu Trooper and let us drive with him working the pedals. That's how I learned that off-roading was fun.

My oldest (6) and I are headed out today to go for a 2 night camping trip where we will have to drive in on some fun trails. As soon as we are off the pavement, I move her carseat to the front seat. She becomes "Nav". I hope she looks back one day and appreciates what we are able to go do because I know will.

...a family vacation one summer in the early 1970s to Lake George...

Glen Cambell's Witchita Lineman was playing on the radio as we approached our destination at night. A silent, what I though lightning storm, but which my dad explained was actually an Aurora Borealis turned night into day with its display of colors...

There was no mortgage to pay, no age related health issues to watch, no concern yet over grades, and colleges and careers....no kids to worry about..parents getting old..or enough age to have me cognizant of the problems the world faced at the time,

Nothing as dramatic or memorable as some of the previous posts, but wanted to share my “Dad” moment.

Took my wife and daughter for a ride in the Jeep with the top and doors off. My daughter kept saying she “hates” the Jeep while smiling and laughing the whole time because of her hair. I’m hoping over time she will find the joy in my new found “naked” lifestyle. 😜

My dad likes jeeps and so do I. He’s 89 and still driving. Hope I can last that long! Happy Fathers Day 😃

No image, but as a father -- the kids are getting big now. A few years back it was the height of summer, super hot for our region. There's a sort of hidden river-beach a ways from here -- you wouldn't know it as you drive by in a mountain highway, but there's a small path to it and it doesn't get overrun like every other beach does in the heat -- usually have it to ourselves. The river has carved out a sort of eddy-whirlpool in the sand, a few feet deep. Great for wading and cooling off. The kids and I spent the afternoon there. It was getting towards evening, the sun was getting low on the horizon, and we headed back. As we drove back in the still-hot air, the sun was filtering in between trees; we had the top off so there was a lot of wind. The kids were so worn out from the combination of hot and cold and exertion in the water that they all nodded off as we listed to the 'country' playlist heading home. The route goes from a mountain highway, through some farmland, and back to 'civilization'. Rather idyllic.

I think that might have been the last time I achieved the 'trifecta' of being able to wear them all out enough to all nod off on the way home -- now the oldest has a phone which is interesting enough to stay awake, and the other two are getting fairly old to nap in the car. It was a beautiful day.

Thanks so much, I really enjoyed reading everyone’s stories.

my son and I got out again yesterday, and my two younger boys came along. My 12 year old has determined he wants an XJ when he turns 16, and my 7yo says he’s going to buy an FJ cruiser 🥴

I do love how this hobby can keep us spending time together!
