My bride announced she wanted to go to the mountains before school started back up (she is a 3rd grade teacher), so off to Ouray we went!!! This was our 2nd time in Ouray wheeling, usually wheel with my brother and his wife, but their schedule didn't work out for this trip. Was the first off road outing for our "new to us" JL and I'm very happy with it!!!
First day we ran Poughkeepsie Gulch up to California Pass and then took San Juan CR 2 into Silverton. My wife has most of the pictures of Poughkeepsie on her phone and hasn't shared them with me yet. I managed on 4th try to get up The Wall on the easier line to the right side, right rear wheel kept sliding off into a hole.
Looking back to the north from Lake Como
The view from parking area at Lake Como up towards California Pass
Lake Como as we approach the top of California Pass
California Pass and on the way down on south side. Unfortunately there was a bit of a traffic jam at the top and we decided not to fight the crowd for a picture of the rig next to the sign.
Some views as we made our way down San Juan CR 2 toward Silverton...so much water moving this trip as opposed to our last trip in 2021. Big snow years make for pretty scenery.
Day 2 we decided to do Ophir Pass over to Telluride and then Imogene Pass back to Ouray. Again my wife has most of the pics, she gets nervous when I try to drive and take pics at same time for some reason. LOL
The village of Ophir as we are starting our decent from the pass.
We didn't spend alot of time in Telluride as weather reports had thunderstorms moving into the area and we wanted to be on other side of pass when they came in. On the way up Imogene we decided to stop for lunch at the Smuggler Union Mine site...
We had wanted to get a pic of the new rig on the iconic overlook (Poser Rock Viewpoint) on the Ouray side, but a thunderstorm rolled in just as we got to the top of the pass and was dumping some rain so we decided it will have to wait till next trip. Rain died down a bit as we descended to the Camp Bird Mine site so we decided to stretch our legs an explore a little bit.
Wife and I are National Park fans so Day 3 we decided to take the short drive up to Montrose and check out Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Very glad we did!!! Watched a bear foraging for berries and fish on the river by the East Portal for 30 minutes or more. He was on other side of river, 52 yards according to my range finder I just happened to still have in bino case. Our afternoon plan was to be back in Ouray and head up toward Yankee Boy area, but as we made our way out of Montrose we could see that it was dumping rain all over the Ouray area so we decided to spend afternoon in town shopping.
Ouray getting a shower
That was our last day we rolled out the next morning to head back to Texas. When my wife gets around to sharing her pics with me I'll get some of them posted up as well.
