Hi, I'm Dusty. And I am a condescending jerk. Just wanted to get that out of the way before I continue. This post is my opinion, not a statement of fact. And I know that a lot of people are going to disagree with me. I'm okay with that.

If you bought a Wrangler and you do not go off road, you bought the wrong vehicle. There are so many posts here, with owners complaining about things that are just inherent to how a Wrangler is constructed. "My Jeep rides worse than ____, my gas mileage is bad after lift and tires (duh), it's noisy inside, my steering is funny, etc, etc..."

Not all of these posts are uncalled for, but some of the people have a rather unreasonable expectation. And some wish for Jeep to change the Wrangler to be more in line to what they are expecting. That's where I don't agree with folks. Several times people have expressed the wish for the Wrangler to have IFS, fixed windshields, even a fixed top. If that's what you want, those vehicles already exist. There are other options from most manufacturers that fit those categories. But there is only one vehicle like the Wrangler. The "quirks and features" to quote Doug Demuro from YouTube are what makes the Wrangler unique and desirable. It's the only SUV still available with a solid axle. It's the only one that has a folding windshield. One of only 2 that has a removable top. The body on frame construction makes it heavy, but rugged. The recirculating ball steering has a heavy feel and combined with the sfa can have rough handling and steering problems compared to IFS. But it's much stronger and easier to modify for improved performance off road. The problems that most people complain about, are part and parcel with the attributes that make the Wrangler such a desirable vehicle to people who want to use their Jeep off road on the trails. But it makes it a bad choice for a daily commute vehicle if you don't intend to ever go wheeling. Especially if you have modified it for larger tires to look cool, but did not consider how that would impact the daily drive.

Rant over. Again, this is just words from a judgmental prick. Feel free to completely ignore me. But maybe, just maybe after reading this you will think about what I wrote and if there is a kernel of truth to it.

WTF does driving off road have to do with "having the wrong" vehicle? I don't drive off road and I don't have the wrong vehicle. From my CJ to my Wrangler, none driven off road, I've always had the "right" vehicle.

Totally agree with this post. I don't really like how my wrangler drives on the road (even though it's much better than those in the past). But, what other vehicle can come stock with stout solid axles, lockers, 4:1 t-case, sway bar disconnect? It's great for offroad use, but not much else.

I gotta disagree. We, my wife(23 Gladiator Overland), my 15 year old daughter (09 JKU) and I (19 2-door Rubicon) all have Jeeps. Their uses are quite different. Mine is a daily driver and our off road warrior, I love it off road and I LOVE driving it every damn day, even if it’s only to go to work. I like how it handles on the highway, as I accept the things that make it a Jeep and excel off road. My wife loves the smooth ride and the fact that she can go to Costco and fit EVERYTHING that she buys in there. She also uses it as a daily driver, she is an auditor for the state, so she travels quite a bit. Lots of windshield time as she puts it. Leather interior and 20” rims works, for her. That Jeep will probably only see an occasional dirt road, or dirt driveway, but she is happily familiar with it. My daughter’s Jeep was our family station wagon since she was born, as soon as she starts driving it will be her DD. I recently talked about trading it in and getting her a new one and she fought that tooth and nail. She said she likes the way it rides and it has so many fond memories in it. We are changing it to be more ‘her’, pink grab handles started that off, but will continue to wheels, tires and lift. She knows what a winch is, how to use it and why she will need one. That won’t stop her from driving to the mall too though. Each one of these Jeeps were ordered for different purposes, each one is used in slightly different ways, but they are all Jeeps and we love them. I’ve had 8 Jeeps, my wife has had 4, and my daughter is on her first. We find that one of our Jeeps will do anything we need to do, when we need to do it. Whether that’s wheelin, shopping, pulling a camping trailer for vacation, going to work or school or taking us to the movies. We enjoy them in each and every aspect of use. Don’t want or need anything else.

I don’t agree at all. A Wrangler makes an amazing winter vehicle. It’s a box on wheels that can haul huge dogs and an entire family with all our gear. We don’t have “off-road” places anywhere near Minneapolis, but what we lack in “off-roading” we make up for with craploads of snow. I’d rather take my Jeep through a foot or more of snow than bashing it off rocks or anything else of the sort. The only thing I have a complaint about previously is the crappy stock stereo which I have replaced and the two battery system which left me stranded two weeks ago. I drive it daily to work to pick up my bucket truck and usually am pretty damn happy, especially with the top off. It gets the same mpg as my outgoing CTS4 Sportwagon.

Saying I have to go wheeling in my Jeep or I bought the wrong vehicle is like saying I need black leather chaps and a pretied bandana to ride a Harley.

I better let Kopi know we have to go wheeling or he can’t like road trips in Jeep. He looks pretty happy on-road to me.

I should just spend 60k on a piece of crap jeep then bend over and take it up the butt. My identity is not tied to my vehicle. I bought a jeep because it was advertised to be just as roadworthy as it is off road. Its neither! My tacoma will drag it sideways. On / Off road, plus it drives well too!! so take your jeep holier than our crap roll it up real tight and........

Respectfully, I do not think that is his point. I believe he is calling out people complaining that their JL does not drive like a Lexus. They do not realize that the more offroad capable the vehicle is, the farther it move from a comfy road handler. Jeep has done a good job of trying strike a balance, but we have to remember that it is an all terrain vehicle.

That's the thing. While purely subjective, I think the Wrangler is every bit as comfy as a modern Lexus, if not more so. It obviously doesn't have the same ton of sound deadening and sport-tuned suspension that a Lexus SUV has, but on-road, it's an amazingly enjoyable ride for what it is.

Maybe the interior could be a little less "plastic-y" with a little better fit-and-finish? I don't know, it seems nice enough and every time I jump in and hit the road I think, "Yeah, this is a nice place to be." It's comfortable, quiet, relaxing and fun, and imo, there's really nothing about it's off-road capabilities that make it any less enjoyable on-road compared to any other vehicle.

Oh I whole heartedly agree. Removing the muffler makes it sound like shit on an exhaust system not designed to run that way. Much like those damn squatted trucks with 10" tips and no muffler. Sounds like dog shit. The only system I have heard thats ok with no mufflers was a j-pipe system.

I get a wrangler for a do everything rig- if it does do some off-roading.
But you mention a rig for your wife- did you test drive other makes or models? It just seems like a rav4 or a CRV would be a better choice than a wrangler in that situation. Both of those vehicles handle significantly better, are safer, get much better mpg, have more features, more reliable, cheaper, and can still handle a dirt road here and there.

I generally agree, if you want all that capability. But if you're okay with the general capability of the XJ, there's not a great successor. JLU is the closest I can come, hence why I own one lol

One big thing left out of a lot of these comparisons:

XJ: ~3200 lbs
JKU/JLU: ~4200 lbs

It was pretty close to perfect for my lifestyle and occasional offroad excursions, sad its basically illegal to make a new one with just a pentastar/8spd added (of course I'd miss the 4.0, but curious what the mileage and feel would be like with the newer engine/trans).

I agree totally. Leave the Wrangler alone..What I was talking about is how the XJ Cherokee was squared up like the 4 door JL years ago and then they changed the Cherokee into a car looking suv. For people who love the traditional squared up Jeep look i suggested Jeep make a larger JL inspired IFS w a few inches more room all around which as I started thinking about it, is basically the new Recon EV..ie doors and top comes off, IFS , squared up. a little more room etc but they need an ICE recon as well as the EV fad is fading..so leave the Wrangler alone but use its styling to broaden the popularity of new models...in my humble opinion...

I agree about the new Recon, it could be a darn good vehicle for doors-off Jeep people who don't need a solid axle. Unfortunately, it looks like a 90's Isuzu rather than a true round headlight CJ/Wrangler Jeep. Such a wasted opportunity.

I'm still not too crazy about the Recon's design, but I've always liked the looks of old Isuzus (Isuzii?) from the 80s and 90s. Even the weird VehiCROSS looks oddly sexy with a lift and some big tires. The Recon is a big dumpy-looking thing that reminds me of the civilian Hummers (the original H1 and HMMWV are kinda sexy in their own right).
