I have owned my Jeep for exactly one year this month. In January I got my first major crack and had to replace the windshield (thankfully I have windshield insurance!). At end of February I got two stars in the windshield and had them repaired immediately to keep from a major crack happening. That was about two weeks ago… This morning I just got another huge star that will definitely spread with the weather changes this weekend. I am so frustrated!

I know this is very common with Jeeps and this is my first one…. So is this just something I need to get used to? I have read about a film (exoshield maybe?) to help prevent cracks. Has anyone found anything that will help minimize or will my insurance be dropping me soon because of all the windshield claims?!

Yep have to accept it. Especially if you have lots of rocks on roads around your area.

I replace mine in the spring, unless in my vision it just waits. Yes you need to accept it with our near vertical windshields. I don't think anything is going to save it from happening.

Does replacing the winshield with the Gorrilla Glass upgrade help? I have heard people with the GG windshield have been broken as well.
I am on my 3 windsheild on my Mercedes 3500 Sprinter van, very fustrating. It takes them forever to recalibrate after the install.

Hi,

Gorilla glass helps marginally, mine got a chip on a edge at 5 months old and got replaced. Think it's natural of the beast so to speak, my wife's 2015 JKUR is on her 3rd, all depends upon your area, how many gravel trains you get stuck behind has lots to do with it.

I have read about films not sure they would help if you get a edge chip

Regards,
Jim

GG is fantastic. I have hit things that sounded like a brick and no damage. I have also had a few things actually chip it. And the chip has not grown over time. I will replace mine with GG when the time comes. I know some people have had no luck. But if you leave a little distance between you and the next guy most of the chips can be avoided.

I have the Racing Optics film on mine. Hopefully that helps delay the inevitable.

ETA: 4/1/23

Welp, my windshield cracked today UNDER the Racing Optic film. A rock hit the unprotected lower edge of the windshield on the highway today and cracked instantly.

Stop tailgating dump trucks. (only half kidding)

Whether in the Jeep (we've cracked GG) or others, definitely found that location impact it a lot. More interstate driving, especially where Semi's frequent, and areas where debris either doesn't get swept off the road, or is held in by barriers tend to be significantly worse.

Worst place for me was when we were in Chicago. All interstate, tons of trucks, and no where for debris to end up but under their tires.

I had a long crack in my brand new windshield at 4000 miles, replaced it with GG and so far I am very happy with it. Last week was driving down a dirt road and took a rock to the upper part of the glass on the passenger side. Was loud enough to make me flinch. Have inspected very closely, no cracks no pits, nada. I'm going to give this a win for GG.

Sounds like bad luck. My JL is 2 years old this coming week (Happy Birthday Jeep!) and I had 2 replacements within the first 8 months and nothing since thankfully. Well.... prob end up with one soon since I jinxed myself now. Oh well.

Btw if you are interested in trying out ExoShield, we just launched a more impact resistant version of our windshield protection film in a DIY kit - and there's a discount code for the forum right now: NOMOREQUACKS20 that will give you 20% off ?

Thank you all for your replies! I think I just need to learn to live with it! The crack immediately ran that morning, down half the windshield. It happened right on the edge, which is what happened the last time. Bad luck for me! I do ride a great deal on the interstate through the city that has barriers along both sides. I will try and hold off for several months before trying to replace it. Regardless, I still LOVE my jeep!

You just need to get used to it. Just make sure to get the chips filled quickly so they don't spread. With my JK at one point I had half a dozen filled chips before I replaced it.

I got my 1st chip on my JLU last month. I have Gorilla Glass and was lucky enough to get them to replace it under warranty.

When I see a transport truck or similar, I stay far away from them, they tend to kick up a lot of ?

If I were you I’d have some sort of protective film installed. Won’t save you from every rock, but hopefully will save you from smaller ones.

Or listen to the rest of the posters and accept that it’s a Jeep thing I guess.
