I have done it on our TJ. Bought a Hard top, had to bring it home, Got to sellers house. Folded soft top down, removed the door surrounds and installed the hard top. It is most definitely doable, BUT you lose sooooooooo much storage room. I would never consider keeping it like that all winter though. as if a Jeep (especially a TJ) isn't already lacking on storage room, there's all but ZERO room behind the seat with the soft top folded and the hardtop on.
