Thanks, roaniecowpony. It looks like the Iridium satellite network will have the best coverage with 36 satellites. Inmarsat would be second best with 3 satellites, but it says in the article that coverage may be spotty, and you might have to move to a new location. This isn't something I'm going to be able to do if I'm injured or the Jeep is broken, which would be the reason I would use a satellite phone anyway. Thuraya has two satellites, but they only cover Europe and Africa.I found this comparison.
Iridium vs Inmarsat vs Thuraya Sat Phone Hardware: Which Is Better? (sbs-satbill.com)
InReach uses Iridium constellation.
Here's the Iridium site. Travel & Outdoor Adventure | Iridium Satellite Communications
I've been sharing this information with my wife along the way. And, while I've got analysis paralysis trying to decide if I should cheap out with text messaging or blue tooth communication or get the "real" satellite phone I want, my wife surprises me. Today UPS drops off a package at the house. My wife says it's for me, so I open it, and there is an Iridium 9555 sat phone inside. It has a prepaid sim card for 200 minutes use in the next six months of service.
What a gal. She remains a keeper, even after 37 years.
Looks like I'll have comms available, even on the Rubicon Trail in 3 weeks.
