I found corrosion on my hood. My local dealership said yes it would be covered but I can't go through them bc they use a third party body shop not one at the dealership. Does anyone know if I am required to go to a dealership to get the work done or can I go to any FCA approved shop?

Hi, sorry you're having to deal with this BS. My 2019 JLUR has bubbling under every door hinge and both hood hinges. The paint on the hood hinges actually just started flaking away. Anyway, I've taken it in to the dealership 4 times to get it fixed over the last two years. My body warrant expires next February.

I finally got the work approved. They're having a 3rd party shop do the work. They sent me to the shop where it was assessed. The body shop sent their estimate over to the dealer, the dealer got it approved with Jeep (Stellantis?) corporate, and once that was approved the body shop called me in to set up an appointment to have the work completed.

Thank you for the info. The only local dealership with a shop doesn't have great reviews. Ugh.....guess I'm officially part of the club.

Can't tell you..shhh
I had one dealer try that with me, because they didn't want to bother with it. I took it to another dealer and they hooked me right up. They took the pictures and filed the claim and sent my Jeep out to a third party body shop to do the work. They even gave me a brand new Cherokee as a loaner for three weeks.

The reviews for mine are mediocre too, which sucks. I actually got ahold of Jeep Wave and called the national hotline and they told me, to my absolute astonishment, that I would need to go to 4-5+ different dealerships and not receive a resolution before they'd even *begin* to assist me. Like, wtf? If a tree falls in the forest and dealers/Stellantis won't fulfil their warranty obligations, do I actually have a warranty?

My 19 JLU is bubbling on two hinges and bottom of both front doors! What warranty is this covered under? Also 4 times, that sucks I’m sorry to hear that!

The jeep comes with a corrosion warranty that covers 5 years on external painted body panels. Here's a link to the 2019 information:

2019 Jeep Gas Generic Warranty (mopar.com)

Checkout page 8, Section 2.2.C on the second bullet point:

" For an outer-body sheet metal panel — one that is finish-painted and that someone can see when walking around the vehicle — the limits are five years or unlimited miles on the odometer, whichever occurs first."

There's also a TSB that's been issued for the issue, here's a link to that as well:

Map Title 23-020-23 REV. A (nhtsa.gov)

There are some zinc shims that it instructs the dealer to install. I'd definitely Recommend that you go in ASAP to get the fixed approved. I bought mine January 2019 so my 5 years is almost up, I'll be making it in just under the wire.

The dealer is losing money on these corrosion repairs more often than not. Unless they have a body shop in-house they have to sublet it to a body shop which costs more than what chrysler pays for the repair making them eat the difference. Most dealerships won't deal with these repairs anymore unless you bought it from them.

If you're unable to find a dealership to deal with it you need to go through corporate themselves and explicitly state the dealer's are refusing to deal with it because they aren't compensated properly for the repair and have the eat a part of it themselves. This issue falls 100% on corporate warranty policies, not the dealer. Raise enough hell with corporate and you'll be able to get approval for a body shop estimate & repair bypassing the dealer entirely, but it's a hassle for sure.

I know people think dealer's are obligated to honor chrysler's warranty but they aren't. They're an independent shop with a name tag that just so happens to sell your brand of vehicle and is able to service it. It's why jeep cares will tell you to go to a different dealer before escalating any type of claim, because they can't control what the dealer decides to do.

Again, 99% of the time if you take your jeep to the dealer you bought it from this will be fixed without any fanfare or if you have a good relationship with your current dealer. If you take it in to a random dealer that you've never been to before there's a decent chance they might refuse to deal with it.

Amazing, thank you so much for the information, I’ve been looking for a couple of weeks. Appreciate you!

Just got mine back from its third repaint for this issue. Went to the dealer and filed a claim. They submitted it to corporate who approved it after a three week wait. I used a well respected third party shop for the work.

Tell the dealer you want the new hinges that have the zinc plates attached to them. There is a tsb for this.

Good luck hope this works out for you.

TSB?

Also, did they have to do a complete body repaint to just the doors? How long did they have your vehicle?

RETIRED!
I just got mine back this evening for the second go-around of repairs. First time in was in May-2023. They repaired the blisters on all 4 doors, hood & tailgate and replaced all of the hinges with the new style. 30 days later the hood blistered again, and about 60 days after that, I discovered a new blister on the left rear door.

So yesterday & today they replaced the hood and door with new ones. The body shop did an incredible job and so far my dealer and Stellantis have really stepped up!
