Reverse is geared higher than 1st. This is why it requires more engine. And yes 4WD works fine in R. It seems harder because of the higher gearing. 1st being a lower gear has more torque multiplication therefore it’s easier. Turning tends to bind the powertrain up. On snow the tires slip relieving this. Dry pavement won’t allow as much slip causing it to fight you.

Thanks to all for sharing so much information in this forum. I had this same issue yesterday backing out of a parking spot in the snow and wondered if this was expected (it had been 20 years since my 1999 Dodge Durango days). I wasn't sure if I was plowing the snow or if the 4WD just responded differently in reverse.

My brothers house has a fairly steep driveway that I like to back up into. Otherwise when leaving I have to make a u turn in his grass. The first time I did I used 2H and slipped the clutch a little. Smelled it too. Every other time 4L and no problem, so much more torque.
