Turbo Blow-Off

I have a 2021 JLU80 with the 3.6 etorque and 8speed transmission.
I was at a light and another JLU was next to me. Nice hot summer day and windows down. When the light turned green he pulled out quick and with every change in gear, I can hear some turbo blow-off coming from his vehicle. Reminded me of a Honda Civic rice burner with the turbos.
For those of you with 2.0L turbo ICE, or 3.0L turbo diesel, can you hear the blow off inside? Or outside with windows open?

3.0 turbo, you can hear it if you're listening for it inside with windows closed. More with them open, but it's not loud by any means.

For those of you with 2.0L turbo ICE, or 3.0L turbo diesel, can you hear the blow off inside? Or outside with windows open?

I don't hear it at all with my 2.0T. This is likely because the OEM blow-off valve vents internally.

There is an aftermarket BOV available that can be set to vent internally or externally. I did a bit of due diligence when I was interested in having one for my JLU. The owner consensus regarding external venting (the desired "psh") is that it can be heard, but one has to be listening for it because it still isn't loud. There are one or two anecdotal reports of external venting causing running issues or a CEL code to appear, too. Something to keep in mind.

What's interesting is that my wife's turbocharged Honda has a very distinct and easily-heard whistle when decelerating, particularly when slowing to a stop. I've given her some good-natured teasing about something in which she has zero interest.

You must have some Superman hearing. The only way anybody around me ever knows it's a diesel is if they ever catch a glimpse of the one sticker on the rear.

Though I will say, it's still a diesel engine, you can definitely replace the turbo. Shoot if you wanted to you could probably twin turbo it pretty easily.

There's a fair amount of guys with the RAM EcoDiesels, and I've seen a lot of those with some pretty interesting mods I didn't even know where available for our engine. Including a bigger turbo. Though I think you're right, I'm not sure it could handle a twin turbo, it can definitely handle a bigger turbo.

Just type into Google "RAM EcoDiesel Turbo upgrade", you'll find a whole bunch of threads about it.

If you can hear the BOV on the 2.0T it's probably an aftermarket vent-to-air replacement. Was watching some videos the other day and came across a particularly loud/annoying one that didn't seem to hold boost or recirculate at all. More of a constant leaky whistle than the quick "psssh" you'd expect from a turbocharged vehicle..

I hear my turbo all the time with my 3.0, especially if against a building downtown or just in the parking lots. But yeah I hear it. It sounds sweet.

With just an intake the stock blowoff noise on my 2.0T is quite noticeable from the inside and out. I have a few videos of the sound on my YouTube if anyone is curious.

Yeah, it’s possible but most I’ve seen say it isn’t advisable, not like the bigger diesel power plants. They just aren’t overbuilt.

I put a Banks Ram Air on my JLR 2.0 a week ago...a few days after I installed it I stomped on the gas to get ahead of a turning semi (to leave more room for him) and I heard the blow-off for the very first time. But that's the first and only time I've ever heard it.

are you sure about that ? I've been building turbo engines and rebuilding turbochargers for over 25 years + as im running a Garrett GTX 28 series, which has a Turbine A/R of .72 and a much larger compressor housing + wheel, they can handle well above 450 hp on stock bottom end with all DPF deleted. Just an FYI

The sound is very subtle.

From inside, when sitting at a red light and no stereo on, I can hear a whistle sound ever few seconds, my wife said it sounded like an ambulance/police horn when it's far away.

I've heard it make this shuffling noise when I throttled it and immediately had to let go, I hear busses make this noise often.
