Anyone love or hate their hitch mounted cargo rack? I think I like this Pakmule one, but I could be convinced otherwise. I just know as soon as I buy it someone is going to tell me about one just like it for half the money so I figured I would ask the forum.

A grand for a hitch rack seems awfully expensive. I just use a cheapo from Quadratec which does as well as I could hope for. Only thing I would say is go aluminum over steel. Much easier to lift and store. Also on the JL you won’t be able to open the tailgate with the rack installed.

I use the elcheapo from Quadratec. Trash, compost, firewood, luggage; I work it pretty hard and its held up well in 3+ years. Plus it comes with a dry bag.

Pakmule looks great but too much $$ for me.

I have this one from walmart. $99. Ive hauled all kinds of crap on it. I did buy a 6” hitch extension otherwise my spare tire takes up half the room on the rack. Hauled stuff on 1k+ mile trips, mountains, you name it.

I have a similar one to somedudu922 from harbor freight, similar price too. Keep in mind the weight limit vs your tow hitch limit. That weight is hanging off pretty good and you will notice it.

I have that very same Pakmule. it is way overpriced. Wobbles. sits off-level in the receiver. I'd return it but it's too big to deal with taking back.

I bought one from Uhaul. It was low cost. Steel. I need to get a hitch extender. It works.
I could buy aluminum next time. I might also get one that folds down toward the ground so you can open the back gate.

I've this hitch rack on my To Buy list, for use when I need extra carrying capacity for the short term (e.g., a camping long weekend.) It has excellent ratings online, and was in fact recommended by a fellow forum member who uses it on his Jeep.

The Pakmule rack MSRPs range from $700 to $1K. Even when allowing for them being made of aluminum, and in the USA, that pricing is ridiculous.

I support the Jeep community vendors where and when I'm able, but price fatigue is also a very real thing.
