Went offroad this past weekend. Aired down to 12lbs and at first it was only one wheel but then all started. While trying to get through a pretty rough trail some of the other guys noticed at times my wheel would spin while the tire didn't move. I'm running a new set of 37" MT Baja Pro's. I don't believe I had this issue with the previous 35" KO2's. Could it be that the new tires just had more traction and previously the KO2 would just loose traction at a certain point before the force between tire and wheel would allow that to happen or could the new tires still have to much lube from install? Thanks

I know this is an old post, but did you ever figure out why the tires spun on the wheels?

I recently had a set of MT Baja Boss Ats installed on my JK, and first time out wheeling 2 of the 4 spun about 4-5" on the wheel. I know because I marked every tire relative to the valve stem. I guess it is possible they spun more, but either way the marks ended up 4-5" from the stems.

When I got home, I popped the beads off and found a copious amount of gel/paste tire lube all over the place. I cleaned off all the lube, and re-seated the beads (which now seated with a nice 'pop'). However, I'm wondering if there could be something about the way MT makes their tires that makes them more susceptible to spinning.

Another resurrection…
I had a recurring steering shimmy happening the last couple of days whenever I got over 60 mph. I swapped FL with my spare and it continued. I swapped FR into the spare position and it went away. Today we drove 3.5hrs home at mostly 70+ and no shimmy.

The tires are 315/70/r17 with about 18,000 miles The suspect tire/wheel when new, balanced out perfectly - zero weights. Took it to @Discount Tire and asked them to check the balance and return the tires to the previous positions.

Pretty sure this is three ounces of weight:

About 1000 miles ago this tire was in the passenger rear position. While there @BradyW and I went to an off-road park.

TLDR - I think I might have spun the tire on the wheel which threw it out of balance.

Method's wheels, some of them, have a rough wheel lip to help with this. It's also the purpose of having bead or rim locks (popular on 4x4 and motorcycles).

@BDinTX, sorry to hear the vibration came back it is possible for the tire to spin on wheel especially when wheeling or it could throw a weight.

The good thing about paying for installation at Discount Tire is it's good for the life of your tires.

I’ve got a bit of shimmy in mine right now as well but I think it’s due to not getting all that Bridgeport mud cleaned out of the wheels. Those nature wheel weights never seem to dry in the proper location to keep the tire in balance.

I’m a bit surprised that spinning a tire on a wheel that was balanced without weights beforehand resulted in requiring that much weight to re-balance. It’s probably time to throw in the towel on those and get some 38’s or 40’s…. :)

@BradyW I’m not gonna lie, I did ask how big they could balance while I was there. He said they could balance up to a 40”… ?

I was thinking 37 but even doing that would probably require me to cut the back of the bumper - you get a surprising amount of flex going over parking blocks at the mall…

Hi,

Try balancing beads vs weights then in theory won't effect it after you air back up.

Jim
