Well had our first issue with our JLU this morning. Wife was on her way to work and Jeep lost all power and starting shaking when giving it gas. She managed to make it through the intersection and pull into her work parking lot. Went and picked it up with my employee to check it and bring it to dealer. Drove fine for me and got it to the dealer with the Service Electronic Throttle Control warning on. Finally got a call at end of day and apparently it needs a new throttle body and part isnā€™t showing an ETA so could be over a work. They tried to tell us we could pick up the vehicle until the part came in but convinced them that there was no way I was letting my pregnant wife drive a vehicle that could stutter/die out while she was driving. Hopefully getting a rental tomorrow for it. Anyone else have/heard of this issue? We have 18k kms on it only.

Hi Dubeau9005,
We're terribly sorry to hear about this! We understand how concerning this may be. Please send us a private message if you need any assistance while your Jeep is at the dealer. We are happy to help in any way that we can.

Iā€™m in Canada. You guys canā€™t do anything for us poor wrangler owners up here. Unless you want to express ship a throttle body to my dealer? That would be amazing. Lol.

Experienced a similar problem this morning. Upon starting the Jeep it was stuttering heavily and the Electronic Throttle Control indicator came on and stayed. I tried to raise the engine speed by depressing the gas pedal but it did not respond to any amount I pressed down on it.
I put it into gear and "drove" about 1/4 mile and back to the house. I was not able to get above 5 mph, the engine was running pretty rough. I turned off the engine checked the fuses and restarted the Jeep. This time it operated normally and the indicator had gone away and drove to work 25 miles away without issue. Also, I started and drove home this evening without issue.

I've called the dealership for a Friday appointment (unless it gets worse)... I hope a failure code was saved. JeepCares also notified.

This morning the morning temperature was 7F (yesterday afternoon was 40F) and probably the coldest the Jeep has seen since I bought it in March. I'm guessing that the small distance I drove this morning brought the engine compartment temperature up just enough to remedy the issue. This evening it was a relatively warm @ 18F.
I think I have a thermal problem and will be able to confirm this on Friday when it's supposed to drop back down to low single digits.

Canā€™t see attached picture for some reason. It was colder up here as well when she had the problem. Got a call today saying Jeep was fixed but havenā€™t asked any more details about what they changed exactly. Will update once I pick our Jeep back up tomorrow.

I removed the picture because I had misunderstood an illustration from the JL service manual and I didn't want to post bum info'. I thought the throttle body was integral to the the upper intake manifold but it is not, it's a separate part.

Looking forward to reading the update on what remedied yours.

Regards

Just picked it up tonight. Seems to be fixed now. They replaced the throttle body and that seems to be it. Crossing my fingers that we donā€™t have the issue again. As for your problem, hope you get it figured out as well. I did a search on the forum and have found a couple people who have had the same error code but for different reasons.

Hey,
I am new to this forum. I bought my Jeep Wrangler JL this summer and have approximately 5000. Yesterday my Jeep moved about 6 inches and inched forward when the "Electronic Throttle Control Failure," light came on. I turned my Jeep off and it happened again, but after I let it runfor a bit I was able to drive it to the dealer. They ran a diagnostic and checked it out and told me I needed a complete throttle body replacement. I am super disappointed.

Is anyone else thinking this is could be or should be a manufacturing issue that warrants a recall?

After looking through many posts it seems it is a VERY common occurrence.

I am a proud Jeep owner, but I am thinking Jeep can do better for their loyal customers.

While I am glad to hear Iā€™m not the only one who has had this problem, sucks to hear that you are having it as well. Donā€™t know if I would consider it a very common occurrence but it does seem to have happened to a few people. Might have been a bad batch of electronics possible. Itā€™s been a day with ours back and so far so good. When we dropped it off last week, there was no ETA on the throttle body but Chrysler got it shipped out real quick as soon as I made them cover a rental for it. Not sure if you are in a rental or not but I would recommend making them give you one. Luckily for you, it happened when you started your Jeep. It happened to my wife taking off at an intersection. Plus if you are in a rental, they tend to get the issue rectified quicker.
One suggestion is after it is replaced, check your oil life monitor. For some reason ours was reset to 100% even though it wasnā€™t at that prior to the replacement. Made sure I went back in to find out when we had our last one. Last thing I want is to go over, something happen to the engine and them void the warranty due to service intervals being too far apart. May have simply been a mistake on their part but itā€™s not like itā€™s that easy to reset. They would have had to scroll over to it in the cluster as we leave ours on speedometer

I drove the Jeep all week without any trouble with the ETC indicator coming on. My thought of a thermal problem wasn't supported as it was 6F this morning. Maybe going from 40F down to 7F overnight was the cause and was the reason for "icing" stated below.

Went to the dealership this morning. They inspected the throttle body and found a code stored for "throttle body icing". For the time being they've re-flashed the PCM / TCM firmware. We'll see how it goes.

I think its a proper way to start considering it was a one time occurrence. The main point is that it's documented and time stamped so they've got something to refer to if there's a next time. I'll be sure to take a video of it happening.

Glad to hear your issue was addressed and seems to be gone Dubeau9005

We continue to have problems with the vehicle since we made the purchase January of 2019. We have had it in for check engine lights now three times since May 11th, the check engine light has cycled on and off since early February.

5/11/19
First visit I had the oil changed and check engine light checked, they cleared the crankshaft position sensor code. It was a weekend and the mechanic that could inspect this was not in, so if the light came on we would need to bring it back.

5/17/19
Check engine light came back on, brought the car back in and they performed a flash update.

Shortly after this the light would come back on then go off after a day or two.

Over the 4th of July weekend my wife was driving the car and once she had been on the open highway for 30+ miles she witnessed a loss of power, one time having to pull over put the car in park and then putting it back in drive. I drove it and found the same thing and the stability control light came on and then turned off.

7/11/19

Brought the car in and the issue could not be duplicated, Customer Service Rep suggested letting the technician drive the car home (about 14 miles) to see if he could get the alarm to happen. From experience it will not happen that quickly, around town we do not see the issue. I suggested getting on the highway and driving, CSR stated that could not be done. I picked the car up and starting documenting as things happen.

Picked the car up with 6,478 miles on it, no alarm present
6,515 alarm came on, no apparent issue.
6528 alarm cleared out on next start up
6,569 alarm came on, no apparent issue
6,579 alarm cleared out on next start up

7/14/19

Sunday morning (8:30-10:30) we drove about 100 miles on the highway no issues

Sunday afternoon (2:30) we got back on the highway, after about 40 miles of open road driving (50-70MPH) the car lost power. This was at 6,726 miles I had to pull over put the car back in park and then back in drive. The D on the dashboard was blinking, it did this each time it lost power. The warning lights were changing rapidly, but I believe it said electronic throttle malfunction. Put car in park and then select gear.

At mileage 6,760 we were on a major highway in the right lane going 70MPH, lost power had to pull over. I put the car in park and then tried to shift back to drive. It would no come out of park, pushed the button to turn the car off and all sorts of lights were flashing rapidly. When I tried to start it the warning lights stated it was not in park. I could not shift at all, and all the letters on the gear shifter were all orange (PRND). We waited about five minutes and the car started and we headed on again. One of the warning lights that flashed was the electronic throttle warning. The stability control light also came one. These came on a couple times the rest of the trip.

6,768, same situation on the highway, died and I was able to turn on and keep moving.

6,776, we had gotten off the highway and the car died as I attempted to make a right from a stoplight. Pulled over put in park and started the car.

6,813, this time we were going up a hill at 50 mph the car lost power but I was able to just lift my foot off the accelerator wait a couple of seconds and then slight press the accelerator and we kept going.

6,817 car in the garage, engine light still on.

The times when this has happened is in the heat of the day on the highway. It does not happen in the first 30-40 miles, so we need to find a way to have you test it in these conditions. I also noticed if you could keep the RPM below 2,000 that helped as well, but that might have been just dumb luck. When it died on the right turn from a stop I babied it the whole way home, only issue was going up the hill at 50MPH when it might have cross the 2,000 rpm mark.

7/16/19

I drove the car to my office, about 40 miles. I tried to maintain an RPM level below 2,000 and to not exceed 45 MPH as I drove in. I had no issues and pulled into a gas station, after filling up I experienced the issue again.

Started the car, could not shift out of gear and the same alarms popped up. Electronic Thrust Control and stability alarm, the engine light had been on previously and remained on. I turned the car off and waited about 5 minutes, started the car and then was able to shift out of park. I little red light came on the dash (under the 2H-4H selection).

Dealer has had the car since the 16th of July, it will be two full weeks tomorrow. They were able to replicate the issue, but as of Saturday have not found the source. The service manager has done a very good job of communicating, but unfortunately have not pin pointed the issue.
