Tap into dash illumination

I’m adding some custom auxiliary switches, and I’d like them to use the regular dash illumination, so that when the dash lights are on or dimmed, these lights are also on or dimmed. These are low-power LEDs that just illuminate the small ring around the switch. They are designed to dim in this way.

I’m thinking of tapping into the wire that illuminates the cigarette lighter. Has anyone tried that yet?

Another possible option is to use that as a kind of trigger for a dimming relay. But I’ve never tried that.
