Can anyone give me information or reasoning for the rubber flaps under the spare tire carrier, it was on our 08 JK and is on our 2023 rubicon JL’s, just wondering if it helps cause the small dust layer that gets onto the inside of the tailgate

Cabin pressure ventilation when driving with top on and a window down. Or shutting a door with the top on and windows closed. Also to help prevent buildup of carbon monoxide.

The flaps let air out but not in. So if you do have an exhaust leak that gets in the cabin the airflow will take it away from the passengers, into the cargo area and out the tailgate.

It's also helpful if someone farts.

All cars have a vent somewhere, in pickups its between the cab and bed. Allows for easier closing of the doors when the windows are closed. Also exhausts air that is blown in by the HVAC system.

As Reinan stated... " It's also helpful if someone farts. ".

For me it is a REQUIRED component of the EFGR (Emergency Fecal Gas Relief) system. Really Really important if you have a passenger whom fails to mention that they had a release.

Simply boost the fan speed of the environmental controls... I also tend to immediately depressurize the cabin using the closest window to the party whom caused the problem.

Depressurization is key!

Every car has those, you just don't normally see them. They're just to keep pressure from building up in the cabin. They're supposed to be one way as they are meant to let air out but not let air in. It helps with your HVAC and closing the doors with all your windows up. If it doesn't work right then it's a pain in the butt to close your doors I've had a vehicle do that before. To get the doors shut I always had to crack a window. Otherwise the harder you slamed the door the harder the air pressure pushed back on it and made it harder to close. You definitely don't want to mess with that.
