In brief summary what is the exact issue with the manual trans in the JL? Is it all of them? What about the JK?

I had great luck with my 2020. There were a couple of fires, possibly fluid related, and there was a recall. The recall involved a new clutch of the same design. But the big problem was a software update that would throw errors for a lot of folks. The newest ones seem to be ok? I haven't really followed it since I traded mine for an auto.

There were at least 3 recalls worth of software "fixes" and to sum it up in two words "Shit Show" comes to mind. Fixing a hardware issue with software is rarely to right move.

@Bryce919er
Just get an auto, its one of the best auto's I've ever driven.

If you already have one, it will probably be fine. Aftermarket clutches all feel 1000% better but all seem to suffer from lubrication issues after 10k miles or so (factory clutches have also been reported to have some issues here but it is few). I know several 2018s that had the latest recalls done but they had 80k miles on them before they got a free replacement.

If you plan to regear and put larger tires, the latest software was known to put it into limp mode, but there are fixes for it now so not a big deal anymore.

I have a MT6, and so far so good. I did change the clutch spring which improved the feel a bit more. Outside of that, the Aisin transmission is smooth.

Backing up on even a smallest incline will cause Clutch too hot error after 10 yards.
What? I just did that last weekend with no issues.

Is that your experience? I work through mud and sand pulling a trailer and my Jeep drives just fine. The clutch isn't optimal by far but I really enjoy driving mine. I'm post 19A recall and haven't gotten a "Clutch too hot" error.

EDIT: I fell for troll bait. :-(

Count me in the no issues column. I’ve got a 2023 but have not had the recall done.

2025 sport 2dr 6MT 19k miles. Other than getting the clutch hot warning 1 time while climbing a steep hill in 4lo and doing donuts in mud, I’ve had no other issues. I’ve since climbed that same hill the exact same way and no warnings. I did remove the factory clutch pedal spring and it is a much better experience!

(When backing up hill, especially with a trailer, try lining up fairly straight if possible then using 4-low.)

There are the software issues that others have mentioned, but there are inherent design flaws as well. The lightweight flywheel makes it much easier to stall than most manual vehicles, even little econoboxes.

The gearing is also wonky with 1-4 being spaced too wide and 5-6 spaced too narrow. There have been countless occasions where I have not had enough torque in one gear to maintain speed, but downshifting would result in 4k+ RPMs, which is higher than I am confortable cruising at.

Regearing the axles can help slightly offset these issues, but it isn't a perfect solution. Getting a custom tune on the engine also helps a bit, but neither of these "solutions" fix the root causes of the issues (i.e. lightweight flywheel and weird gear spacing).

If you are not willing to invest in a custom tune and/or regear, I agree with purchasing an automatic. Or, you could get a 6MT JK, which has neither of these issues.

'19, 85k miles, Rubicon on stock clutch. First 30k miles stock, then '37s. 4.10 gears until 77k miles, now 5.38's. Have not done the latest recall, waiting until the clutch finally wears out.

Definitely agree with Gabe that the gearing in the transmission is wrong, though the deeper gears do help a lot. If you are looking to buy, find one with the 4.88 option. I only went as deep as I did because I tow. Wanted to lessen the load on the clutch as much as possible.

Like Gabe said...gear spacing is wonky, but I haven't had any problems with the clutch or software. Recall was done on mine before I got it, I re-geared it to 4.56....
