Got stuck coming out of a trail (right side was much muddier than left, should’ve walked it first). Front end was buried up to axles. Took a lot of digging. Neighbors came in the gladiator but we couldn’t get traction. Thanks to kindness of strangers on the trail, we got suggestion to anchor the truck with some additional recovery straps and it came right out.

I got pulled out several times when I was young/new to off road, and had not developed the judgement to read the trail. I have since paid that back many times over by pulling others out when I come across them.

I think a strap or a rope would have made that an easy recovery, but the winch worked nonetheless. I see a winch as more of a self recovery tool. Not always, but most times.

It happens. Do yourself a huge favor and put together a self rescue kit AND a basic survival kit. Stash them in the Jeep and keep them there. The ability to save yourself in a bad situation is a huge comfort, and the ability to stay fed, warm, and hydrated when hung up in the middle of nowhere is worth a fortune when you need it. We are in our 70’s and have solo’d in Jeeps for decades-but we ALWAYS have basics with use. Frankly it’s been years since I needed them for us, but I’ve rescued several folks (typically newbies) over the decades, including people in much more “capable” rigs than mine. ANY rig can get stuck if you try hard enough. I found years ago I’d much rather spend my time traveling and sight seeing rather than digging out, so I pick my lines carefully.

Ya I had recovery straps, boards, shovel. But unfortunately left my come along out after the winter. It would’ve been easy to pull from the back.

Definitely could’ve avoided if I had walked the particular line. Good lesson and happy outcomes.
