Hi Forum;

I did a search and found several threads about steel bumpers rusting, but none that seems to give a clear solution... so asking again to clarify options. I'm not upset, I figured this day would come, just not so soon.

I have a Smittybilt Gen 2 XRC stubby bumper and installed it last February (11 months ago). I LOVE IT! It is awesome, looks exactly like I want, and have not been happier... until last week I noticed some minor spot rust (see images below). I have contacted Smittybilt and it seems like they plan to replace the bumper (!). Amazing customer service on their part, but I'm open to trying to clean it myself.

1) Is there any rust "cleaner" I can prep the areas with that won't kill off the current powder coat (it is their light finish powder coat, not that heavy textured one)?
2) What should I use to knock it down... a stainless steel brush, or Scotchbrite pad? I assume I want to be less aggressive
3) It seems that Rustoleum Bedliner (rattle can) is the preferred touchup paint from the folks here. Is that the best, or is there another brand I should consider? (again, this is the light texture finish, not the coarse texture bumper they used to offer)

Pretty sure you won't be able to just "touch-up" without it looking totally "touched-up". If they're sending a new bumper, I wouldn't bother.

Yeah... I don't mean to look a gift horse in the mouth, I'm thrilled by their customer service. Maybe I'll let the thing rot more before I do the replacement.

Thanks.
