Jeep Wrangler JL SS3 LED Fogs - Diode Dynamics - ? Wow! 890-00

Well I am late to the party, but.... I finally have ordered the @Diode Dynamics, SS3 Pro Type M Kit White SAE Fog SKU: DD6197. (I opted to not go with Amber for use reasons)

After reading a zillion reviews of the SS3's installed on different brand/model vehicles, I have finally come to the conclusion that I have been missing out so to speak, by sticking with the factory LED fog lights.

Overall the reviews of the SS3 offering are very positive ..

Anyway, I have watched a slew of YouTube videos showing the install on Jeeps, Ford, you name it .... but I'm still wanting a little more info in regard to the install on a JL.

Install on a JL should be very very easy and I'm thinking about 20 mins. per side with the time it takes to aim the SS3 fogs..

That's what I want to hear from other JL owner's here that have installed the Diode Dynamics SS3's .... I want to hear how you went about the aiming of them.

I do have a plan but want to hear from other's here so I can ahead of time..... know whether my plan is the best in regard to aiming the SS3's.

Odd, but what I did for aiming my @Diode Dynamics was to enlist the help of my other half, in another vehicle, on the back roads, to see how they were aimed. Now granted, I have the amber fogs up front but that should have no bearing on this discussion.

I tested them on the other vehicles ability to see, w/o being blinded, from the front as well as from behind. I did mount mine on the top of the bumper so I was worried that they might be too high.

After the team test, I then began running them on the road to see if I got "flashed".

No issues!

(The vid below just gives a comparison. I was parked at an odd angle too).

I installed one side first
Parked right in front of my garage door. Closed the garage door
Turned on the fogs and aimed matched the stock fog light line
Then installed the other one and did the same thing to match the first one I installed.
Worked perfectly

In the videos I have watched there have been two approaches lets say....

A few videos say to tighten the 2 light bracket bolts firmly, then install the SS3 on the bumper. Supposedly, you can still push on the SS3 and adjust it a tad up or down..

Now, in other videos, they say do not snug up the two bolts firmly.... they say do finger tight, then install. You push SS3 firmly, in order to aim and then pull the SS3 out and tighten the 2 bracket bolts.

I'm thinking, best is to do one side at a time. I'll finger tight the bracket bolts somewhat firmly and then install the SS3 into the bumper.

Now, I will aim the SS3 using the markings I placed on the garage front wall... markings that I placed based on my factory installed LED fogs that I feel are adjusted properly..

After aimed, I will gently remove the SS3 from the bumper, tighten firmly the 2 bracket bolts and then install again in the bumper.... and then recheck against lines on front wall.

Once aimed properly, I will reinstall the plastic cover that is on the back side of the bumper.. Then onto the other side of the JL to repeat the process.

Comments... What did you do.. ?

@Rhinebeck01, now you are taxing my brain. Here is my install vid. I will rewatch to see if I can remember (damn old age). Slides can be paused for a better look.

@Rhinebeck01, it looks like I placed them, then did the final verticle adjustments while bolted on.

So you are thinking that even with the 2 bracket bolts tightened so they stay putt with daily driving that you could/can still push on them to adjust aim.. ??

@Rhinebeck01, Short answer, yes. If I am not mistaken, all I had to do is loosen each side bolt, angle correctly, then retighten

Unfortunately we are talking about two different animals. I am talking about SS3's that are replacing the factory fogs..... factory fobs that are in the fog light mount spots on the front bumper.

For sure, I will get-er done easily.... but figured I would ask other's before I do the deed...

If anything this thread may help other's with the install the terrific SS3 fog light offering from Diode Dynamics.

Thanks @Aonar !

I am no help to you because I put them on my AEV front bumper and the install is different :movember: ?

I did install KC led fogs when I had the stock steel bumper and I didn't have an issue installing. Did the same thing; added one side first, adjusted the angle then did the other side.

This is a smart idea (if replacing the factory-aimed lamps in the factory bumper). Better yet, before replacing either, park facing a wall, garage, fence, etc and use some tape (maybe blue painter's tape) to mark the highest point for each lamp or outline it entirely. Not sure if fogs allow for any left/right adjustment or repositioning, but it wouldn't hurt to tape some marks for side cutoff as well, if possible.

Then do what you said and install one lamp and adjust it to match the other (and the tape marks) and repeat with the other side.

Bingo!
I made sure to leave my Jeep in the same spot so assuming its in the same spot then the blue tape sounds like a great idea! If you are not keeping it in the same spot then adding blue painters tape on the tires as well so you know where to 'chalk' the tires, will be required ?
