Our Jeep's rear tailgate check strap makes a terrible squeak when opened or closed. I have cleaned the strap with no effect, then tried a dry lube and next a spray silicone without any change. I hesitate to use oil since it will attract dirt. The owner's manual shows nothing, and neither does a Forum search.
Any suggestions?

Are you sure it's the strap and not the arm mechanism inside? Every once in awhile mine develops a creaking and I spray some white lithium grease in there and it goes away.

I can't say exactly what is causing the noise, it does come from inside the friction device that the strap slides into. With as much dirt and dust that gets into every nook and cranny, I hate to apply grease in an area that is next to impossible to get into for cleaning.
I may have to resort to using a spray grease, it's quite noisy.
The strange thing is, it didn't make any noises for the first three years; it was a sudden change.
