We just cut in 2 then trimmed a spare old thin rubber car floor mat we had lying around. Anything flexible like that will do just fine. Without we were still getting way too much road spray so decided to simply do this. Has def worked a charm as no more crap gets thrown up anywhere making washing and cleaning a breeze.
But no would not recommend you try to make your own mud flaps. As you need specific fittings and a molded fit to function perfectly using the OEM holes with zero cutting or drilling. The extra mount points up higher add a lot more rigidity to the WT flap overall.
Before we had to constantly clean all that mud and frozen slush off - now we get nothing. So is perfect now. Just required a bit of thought and redesign is all.
