So I have the Smithybuilt 9500 XRC GEN2 winch installed on my Jeep (from previous owner) and I was curious about what exactly the specs mean. Does the 9500lb "load capacity" mean that I can keep my Jeep stationary and expect to pull 9500lbs? Or does that mean I can hook up and pull 9500lbs when putting it in gear and pulling that way?

Thanks in advance

It means that it is rated to pull 9500lbs on the last wrap of rope around the drum. Each wrap or layer decreases the maximum rating. However, from the real world, I can tell you that this winch will get you out of just about anything and it has plenty of power. I pulled two heavy (built) Jeeps up very steep hills recently and I have the same winch. Also, you can double the pulling power by using a snatch block. It will cut your line speed in half, though.

That XRC Gen 2 is a VERY nice winch. Mine wasn't very hot, either, after those pulls.
