I maintain a facebook group for a route called the Smokey Mountains 1000. One of the fun parts for me is getting out on the route to prove in proposed changes, and to try and add useful waypoints. I went for a 4-day ride last week while working on the part of the route that is north of I-40. It was wet and rainy. I was glad to be in a Jeep instead of on a motorcycle. On the other hand, it was great not to have to deal with any dust. :)

You mean the Great Smoky Mountains? ?
Ahhh. There's always that one guy.....

What does smoky mean? Smoky is an adjective. It means characterized by an abundance of smoke. A 1950s pool hall would have been smoky. So too would Chicago, during the Great Chicago Fire.

Smoky could be used in a more abstract sense to describe anything wispy or dark, like tendrils of smoke. Someone’s eye makeup might be smoky, and so might the vocals on a blues recording.

Smoky can also describe a flavor profile, in which case it means tasting like smoke.

Here are some examples of the various uses of smoky as an adjective:

  • I went inside the pit house, but the air was smoky from the barbecuing meat, and my eyes began to water.
  • Shalane wore smoky eyeshadow to the party, to make her blue eyes pop.
  • Dad’s grilled salmon has a delicious, smoky, hickory flavor.
  • A chunky avocado salsa verde — slightly sweet, thanks to agave, and slightly smoky, thanks to a touch of pasilla chili — and a Key lime wedge come on the side.

Smokey is, however, a proper noun in the case of Smokey Bear or Smokey the Bear, a long-running advertising mascot for the U.S. Forest Service. It is interesting to note that Smokey Bear’s creators spelled his name this way intentionally, to differentiate it from the adjective smoky.

The sentence below is an example of the correct usage of Smokey. Remember, this is the only context in which Smokey is correct:

  • Smokey Bear says, “Only you can prevent forest fires.”
  • Smokey Bear (a.k.a. “Smokey the Bear”) turns 70 this year, and he’s celebrating with a softer, social-media-friendly ad campaign. –The Washington Post
Smokey is only used as a proper noun. It is also a common surname.

I maintain that I am right and the park service is wrong. :)

Except in the case of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. ?
In fact, your first paragraph explains precisely why it's called The Smoky Mountains.
But it's all good

After you wrote all that about the word Smokey the proper name is Great Smokey Mountains. Think that is all he meant.

I wasn't trying to be snarky. Well, not too much. In fact, the last line of the post I made about the spelling was followed by a smiley.

" I maintain that I am right and the park service is wrong. :)"

So you see, this is making me laugh. I've had this discussion numerous times. I believe that the "Smoky" spelling came from a mistake on a map made way back in the day. The "Smokey" spelling for this thread, and my Facebook Group pages, is used intentionally.

Is your path mostly paved roads or do you map out a lot of forest roads?

The routes include as much unpaved road as I can find consistent with destination travel. Almost all of the roads on the routes that are paved are 2 lane roads. Deep in the mountains, even the 2 lane paved roads are special.

Hi Andy, that breakfast looks like it could have been at Famous Louise's Rockhouse Restaurant. Also, the motel in Pineola is much better than the ones in Linville Falls.

I grew up just a few miles south of Linville in Spruce Pine. All my Moms family is up in that area and my cousin owns, or maybe owned, I haven't been back in a decade, the Ski Shop and motel in Pineola. Lots of mountain roads and trails up there heading down into Harpers Creek there are a few hundred acres her family and a few other owns right smack dab in the middle of the National Forest. I mean no power, no telephone, nothing for a dozen miles. I used to hunt, fish, ride 4 wheelers, dirt bikes and 4x4s all over there. You were close to there I see from your Mortimer photo...

Andy, I am from Tennessee and have looked too many times to admit. I always use Smoky Mountains now and believe it to be the way I will continue to spell it! I love your trip/post. Great job!!!

I also love the Rock House. Linville and the whole area are great. Great trails going everywhere in the area.
