Sorry guys, it turned out to be the Mopar Roof Racks... :headbang:
I had a similar situation this week, I have a Thule roof rack (with Square bars) took a ride during the week and noticed a weird whistling noise, turns out one of the end caps on the bars came off (luckily found it)Kind of like blowing over an open bottle top. Once I replaced it, the whistling stopped

I don't have any whistle with mine, but I haven't put the front ones on yet, only the back. wonder if it's the front-only?
Hmmmm nice answer buddy makes you think. Good question. I’m in the market now so I’m looking as my JL is hard to get parts for still!

I had mine now for almost a year and never took them of (rear doors only).
No wind noise for me so far. What I noticed is the rubber spacers start cracking really bad, to a point where I have to take off the steps and replace the rubber with something else.

getting the bolds loose was quiet a fight cause I did not want to damage the paint on them.
I am not sure if I would buy them again or figure out a different solution to get access to the roof rack.

Did anyone have issues removing the bolts?
oh heck yeah-this was a nightmare! Tried a breaker bar-no go, tried impact-no go and I broke the bit. I asked a buddy for help, one of us with the breaker bar, the other held the socket steady. The should have been a fun half hour install, turned into nearly stripping one head and calling in reinforcements

Thanks for clarifying it's the roof rack making the noise; though I had wondered if there may be some wind noise from looking at hinge-steps generally. From my searching, it doesn't seem any of the hinge-step designs have any 'aero' aspect.
